A mob in Palmetto Georgia fatally harmed four people and injured five others as prison guards faced a flare of violence. The incident left prison floors stained with blood and walls battered while authorities prepared for a scheduled trial. Victims reportedly begged for their lives as the prison turmoil unfolded.
In Palmetto Georgia a white mob of 57 men attacked Johnson's warehouse early today. Negroes were confined and shot. several dead, including Henry Bingham, with others wounded. State troops and militia prepared to patrol as authorities move to restore order.
March 1 Palmetto mayor received word that an incident at a jail used building near Atlanta and West Point route involved gunfire killing nine Negroes. Gov. Candler arranged militia alert and a special train. capital guards and patrols deployed. Citizens remain uneasy amid potential further violence.
Doon residents arrived at the scene to aid the wounded. Clem Watts, thought injured, was carried home but showed no injuries upon inspection. Jobe Bisby is badly wounded and not expected to recover. Governor Candler offered rewards totaling 400 dollars for information leading to the mob, urging swift conviction and punishing the outrage as inexcusable.
General Ove lists casualties from March 13 to 15 including Twelfth Infantry Private Fred J. Kelly shoulder slight. Fourth Cavalry Sergeants Samuel Jones Captain Fred Wheeler and others wounded or killed near Guadalupe. Twenty second Infantry Private Alfred Bebruni lift severe. Private Walter Duran listed. multiple names with varying injuries across companies M E K and B.
Manila reports say the fortified village of Caltal northwest of Passe fell today after a desperate battle to the Twentieth Infantry. American losses included 17 wounded. insurgent casualties were heavy.
Willard Howard of the Cuban Industrial Relief Fund visits Jacksonville en route to Cuba to purchase agricultural tools for Guines. He reports Cuba’s condition worsening since last year, with vacant fields and farmers gone, urging U.S. aid to help reclaim lands and support orphans, asking funds be sent to Continental Trust Co, 30 Broad Street, New York, marked For the Cuban Industrial Relief fund.
Jead Bothner, wife of Gus Bothner, died near Ada after a long period of nervous prostration and travel fatigue. Yesterday spinal meningitis developed and caused a serious decline. doctors report her condition as now critical, with fears she may not recover. The husband was summoned.
The Texas Legislature passed a bill appropriating two dollars to support state health officials in suppressing smallpox in Laredo. Reports say about one hundred smallpox patients are in Laroche and state health officers will take charge at once.
Chicago March 16 P D Armour again ill at his home 2116 Prairie Avenue after a bout with influenza. He has not attended to business for almost four weeks and plans a Europe trip when able. Armour, long noted for simple routines and early rising, has kept to bed much of the time since January.
March 1 Chirake The last witness before the army beef court of inquiry testified that half the canned roast beef issued to soldiers in Cuba was unfit. An officer described maggots in a can and heavy heat during canning. Witnesses recalled sickness from tainted meat and a soldier’s death after subsisting on corned beef and hardtack. The court planned further inspection in Omaha and Kansas City before returning to Chicago.
Post-Dispatch reports from Hot Springs Arkansas that W. J. Bryan, then in Texas, notified Knights of Pythias grand chancellor Thomas W. Milan he would visit March 2 to lecture for the proposed National Pythian sanitarium in St Louis. Also dated Colombo, Ceylon, noting the Norna, an American yacht, reported distress in the Red Sea aboard by Brisk.
Dr Harper of Chicago university left for California to address the University of California students on Democracy and the University. He will visit Pasadena for a Baptist church address and a reception for him by Dr Noramah Bridge, then Pomona College at Claremont with no address, and the Turcop Polytechnic School at Pasadena for the chief talk at the Southern California Educational conference in Los Angeles.
Reports from Apia Samoa describe threats by the Matuafa to burn Malie village and the levying of taxes to support Mataafa. British and American consuls issued proclamations denying recognition of Malietoa and warning against interference, while the German consul backed the provisional government. Naval officers from the Porpoise Philadelphia and Mugship held talks, with an imminent ultimatum expected as armed warriors rally and tensions rise.
The Cheyenne and Northern line train, snowbound for three weeks, was abandoned and passengers were taken by wagon to Horse Creek, then to Cheyenne. Relief efforts failed due to drifts up to sixteen feet, with crews cooking on car stoves and surviving on scarce rations during the ordeal.
John Sherman, a passenger aboard the American line steamer Paris, arrived from Trinidad with excursionists. He suffered pneumonia but showed improvement after Port of Spain and Martinique port stops. Brig. Gen. Fred Grant hosted him. relatives Colgate Hoye and F.2 Wibore stayed close as condition improved.
A telegram from Colgate Hoyt reports Mrs Sherman sick with pneumonia and requests that ex Secretary Sherman be brought to the United States aboard a government ship. The Chicago is ordered to Kingston Jamaica to meet Paris and transfer Sherman, with a medical officer aboard for care en route to Hampton Roads.
Washington March 16 reports posted messages from the War Department detailing ship movements. Entries refer to transports Sherman sailing to Manila and another carrier with the Third Infantry and Seventeenth Cavalry under J H Page, with ports including Port Said and Singapore cited in dispatches.
Tomorrow the Jackson county bar plans to travel to Topeka to advocate for T. S. Hurrel of Holton for judge of the new Thirty sixth district including Jackson and Jefferson counties. They will seek the governor’s appointment and confer with the governor, noting Hurrel as a leading state lawyer. The lone challenger appears to be Senator Charles F. Johnson of Orkualousa.
Kansas Mill Owners association held a meeting in the Chamber of Commerce building in Kansas City yesterday afternoon. The directors will decide whether to move the headquarters from Ottawa Kansas to Kansas City at an afternoon session. George L Brinkman of Kansas City is the president of the association.
San Francisco reports rain lasting over twenty four hours with the storm now general across the state. Weather officials forecast heavy rains tonight from north to south, potentially ending drought and boosting harvest prospects for crops, fruit, and feed. Farmers and mechanics express jubilation over the brighter outlook for the year.
Information from Chicago says the grievance committee for Santa Fe operators has withdrawn its demand for a 22 percent horizontal salary increase. A schedule of individual raises is being arranged with increases granted where work has materially increased. The minimum salary issue remains unsettled. General Manager Frey continues talks and will not return to Topeka until tomorrow or Saturday, delaying final action.
At St Louis March 16 awards were given in half the divisions of the third annual beach show of the St Louis Kennel Club. Frank J Gould of New York and C A Pratt of Little Rock split prizes with Pratt's Le Royal winning top rough coated dog in three classes. Pratt's Hornsva won novice rough coated, Gould's Chantrell Kitthe second, Hornsea Countess third. Gould's Marvelcraft led rough coated bitches in two classes, and Gould's St Bernard swept open straight events. Le Royal won dogs and Marvelcraft won bitches in the special class for winners.
The Republican state board of charities pressed J W Tanner, steward at the Topeka asylum, to resign after considering withholding under tenure of office rules. He finally submitted his resignation, ending his oversight role as Tt S Black of Fort Scott had effectively carried out the duties. A board member stated Black did the work and that Tanner’s administration was unsupported by law, with Black and others on the payroll as attendants while Tanner’s duties continued.
Andews of Atchison county says he will stay home and will not travel to Topeka on March 21 to sit in the senate for the Faljoon Stuart contest hearing. He warns the senate could send a sergeant for him but he demands payment of his fare and board if he is compelled to attend.
Rome reports March 1 that Pope Leo is weakening with doctors closely monitoring his condition as the Measagera notes increasing frailty and care from his physicians.
John Shelton, a 32 year old Santa Fe boilermaker, collapsed at 4 oclock yesterday afternoon at 13 North Ktein street, believed to have died from after effects of grip on his heart. Funeral 2:30 Sunday at the Presbyterian church with Dr Countermine and Rev M C Long officiating. He leaves a widow and a young son. He belonged to K of P Indes No 38, M W A lodge No 536 and A O U W lodge No 244, with two lodge members to act as pallbearers.
Mexico City reports the Seorn Funts mine, one of the country’s farm mines, has been bonded to an English syndicate. They offer £100,000, with a fixed price of $3,000,000 gold and an option expiring April 25.
Chicago dispatch reports Joseph Medill proprietor of the Chicago Tribune died early today in San Antonio Texas at age 76. Born in Newburywick Ohio he contributed to the Free Soil and Whig press before helping organize the Republican party and later became a leading editor and owner in Chicago.
Harrison to succeed Himesit with Ada Ortzison as city treasurer and Andrew Sy Ryan for city attorney. Win ter, the present incumbent, to run for city clerk. Platform pledges national benefits and calls for street rating tests and station updates.
Mrs Benjamin Young, wife of a well known Quincy street letter carrier, collapsed at breakfast with sudden left side paralysis. Immediate assistance followed as doctors diagnosed an apparent stroke linked to a recent grippe. Her condition remains under medical care.
Clarence Richards of Wellington is nominated by Chester L Long to attend the military academy. Richards, son of AL Richards editor of the Wellington paper, is praised as an unusually bright youth. The appointment marks his first political favor sought. Funeral of B Wheldon Amporia reported with elaborate K of P rites and pallbearers listed. family to Springfield, Ohio for interment.
