A colony of 310 colored people from north Missouri and eastern Arkansas passed through the city en route to Savannah to embark Saturday for Liberia. They travel under the Southern Emigration Society with a through rate of $41 a head and life-protection assurances in their new homes. Milnes Nominated in Kalamazoo. The 116th ballot for a Republican congressional candidate to replace Julian C Burrows nominated Lieutenant Gov Milnes.
A repeated arrest report details J P Lee of Manhattan, once a bright lawyer, picked up intoxicated for the third time this year. He was not prosecuted today, turned over to G M N Parker, and likely to be sent to Keeley Institute. A public appeal and fund drive, with early contributions, is urged to cover treatment costs.
The Maine lower house approved a women’s suffrage bill by an 80 to 10 to 55 vote. The measure now moves to the Senate for consideration as supporters push for full enfranchisement.
Daisy Gardner sues George W. Stone for breach of promise claiming his father locked him in a vault to stop their wedding. The elder Stone admits obstructing the match but denies locking him in the office vault. Gardner seeks $10,000 in damages amid the sensational domestic dispute in Cureaco.
Judge John F. Dillon of New York arrives in Topeka with Mrs Dillon to visit son Hiram P. Dillon. The eminent lawyer and Union Pacific general attorney will stay until tomorrow night. His New York visit coincides with Miss Anna Gould’s marriage, noted as a social link to his friend Jay Gould.
The forecast notes 58 this afternoon after a 20 degree morning and calls for cooler conditions tomorrow afternoon as a low pressure system develops in the north. Pressure has fallen across reporting stations, with heavy rains in Arkansas and Missouri and a potential gulf storm. Snow is falling in South Dakota as the system moves eastward. Winds will shift to the west and northwest, bringing cooler weather by Friday afternoon.
Charles Tiegs a prosperous house mover was found dead in his bed from poison after a $4000 breach of promise verdict went against him in favor of Mrs Matilda Stuart. He had proposed earlier to Mrs Stuart after an engagement then refused marriage prompting the suit and his suicide. He argues continued low value harms all classes, warns that money powers and servile politicians push anarchy, and affirms America must use American constitutional principles without borrowed economic systems.

The Red Star steamer Captain Nickels, grounded at Port Lap, has been floated and will proceed to Jaffa to embark American excursionists. The New Jersey senate defeated a bill to punish public school teachers wearing sectarian garb. The Cairo council of state approves extending the railway to Assouan.
Laura Hail aged 24 dies of consumption in Auburn today. D B Robinson, acting president of the Santa Fe railroad, arrives in Topeka from the west on a line inspection tour and departs for Chicago tomorrow. Only candidate announcements include W A S Bird for city attorney H K Rowley for city treasurer 83 McFadden for city clerk W F Ellison for city clerk J B Furry for justice of the peace. Mrs Dollie Barrett dies at 12 east Seventh street this morning and will be buried Saturday. Her husband George Barrett was killed six months ago after falling from a Union Pacific train. She was 40 and died of paralysis.
A report from Havanas notes Spain objects to American consul general Williams over his handling of Cuban citizens affairs and his diplomatic duties. Williams, aged about a tont on years, faces pressure as the State Department seeks to safeguard Americans in Cuba amid rebellion. The salary totals around 10 000 to 12 000 yearly with official fees. Idaho settles its contest as George E Shoup wins reelection to the U S Senate with 27 votes to 12 and 14 for rivals.
McKee Rankin the renowned comedian appears at the Grand opera house in Topeka all next week starting Monday night. Prices are 10 20 cents. The program features Rankin’s famous old time pieces and a supporting cast from Kansas City Lyceum and Denver Broadway theater groups. An emergency booking with compelling pricing makes this a major local attraction.
A noon telegram from Latina reports Bishop Thomas has regained consciousness after darkness since midnight and can speak again after 36 hours. Dr McClintock says this offers slight hope of recovery as Mrs Millepaugh notes a letter from her husband. The day closes with the First National Bank of Texarkana closing its doors.
