New York March 3 Cyclists across the nation led by the League of American Wheelmen plan to volunteer for government service if war breaks out with Spain. Of 107 000 members an estimated 90 000 could be called. President Isaac B Potter says wheelmen would serve if needed, praising their speed and daring on public roads.
A Paris artist, driven by the Zola trial mania, believed himself Major Esterhazy and leaped from a high window, dying on the causeway. He had grown increasingly obsessed, shaving his head, shouting warnings, and imagining ambushes as the case neared its end.

Grand jury yesterday indicted Cook, a well known carpenter from New York, on charges of attempted murder by arsenic poisoning after a December quarrel. His wife Laren Bevin, wounded and under medical care, survived the attack.
