Mrs E A Harrison of 1717 Van Buren street was robbed of a pocketbook at 6 pm on Kansas avenue between Thirteenth and Fourteenth Streets. A young colored man grabbed the pocketbook from its belt fastening as he passed from behind and tore it free. James Turner pursued the robber with another man following, but the thief drew a pistol and Turner released him. The pocketbook was recovered later on Topeka avenue, emptied and in the gutter. Police suspect Phony Robinson, a notorious young colored tough, and have issued a warrant. The theft yielded about $8 and some jewelry. The incident occurred in broad daylight, prompting criticism of local colored dives and loafer culture.
