At the Populist convention in St Louis on July 24 Bowman of Alabama nominated Garnett Gibbs of Texas after some confusion. The convention adjourned at 6 p m following the platform presentation and nomination effort.
St Louis July 4 The Free Silver convention adopted Bryan and Sewall nominations for president as the next order of business. ELC Life of Kansas nominates Wm J Bryan for president. Pace of Nebraska voices the nomination of Bryan.
Washington July 24 A department of agriculture summary notes generally poor fruit conditions nationwide in June. Apples fell from 7h to 6406, peaches show a 129 percent drop, and states from New England to California report below average yields. Delaware Maryland Ohio Michigan Wisconsin Delaware Kentucky Missouri show mixed prospects with notable declines in New Jersey Connecticut New York and Pennsylvania.
The Populist platform declares free and unlimited coinage of silver and reaffirms Omaha Platform planks. It calls for government money issuance, direct taxation, postal savings, national rail and telegraph ownership, direct legislation, and a Cuban independence stance, urging unity with aligned groups for the upcoming election.
Chicago and St Paul report detailed plans for a new national convention to back the gold standard ticket. Prominent figures from Missouri Wisconsin Iowa and Indiana attend a July 2 meeting urging a split from the Chicago platform and calling for a fresh national convention to decide on a ticket.
