A dam break unleashed a flood that swept down a mountain ravine for a mile toward two brickyards. Nine persons are confirmed drowned and twenty others remain missing, with laborers' homes in the area inundated.
Heavy rains caused the Newburg Fishkill reservoir system to fail flooding valleys near Duchess Junction. Houses, brick yards, and boarding houses were swept away. nine drowned, twenty missing, two hundred yards of track washed out. Trains stalled, bodies recovered, and officials warn it will be late before services resume. The town’s water system, operated by a private company serving Marlton and Fishkill on the Hudson, suffers severe damage. other reservoirs remain intact as rescue efforts continue.
Chicago plans a one dollar tax per wheel plus annual levies on other vehicles under the new ordinance. Estimates show 8000 bicycles and substantial motorized transport would fund the revenue. The measure, approved by the council, imposes varied fees from one to several dollars based on vehicle class.

Monterey July 4. Portuguese vice consul Manrique Laidley arrived to investigate the tearing down and burning of the Portuguese flag raised over the business place on the Fourth of July. He demands an apology from the United States if the troop cannot satisfactorily explain the incident. The crowd involved was composed of young men.
Washington July 14 Senator Hanna shows signs of stress and poor appetite. He fears rest is needed and contemplates a trip to Europe to escape Washington office seekers. He spent two nights at the White House before returning to Arlington, wary of criticism and away from the Capitol crowd.
Unusually high tides and strong winds batter New York summer resorts at Coney Island. Brighton Beach faces vigorous surf as the amphitheater and Old Ocean House are endangered. Water surrounds the Old Ocean House and the hotel front was swept away near 11 o'clock last night. Lawns in front of Brighton Oriental and Manhattan Beach hotels were washed out and flower beds uprooted.
Washington July 14 President McKinley issued an order suspending the operation of ex President Cleveland's order consolidating the pension agencies.
N C Creede, famed multimillionaire miner, married a Del Norte landlady who had sheltered him during illness. After a rapid sequence of marriages and moves from Sunnyside to Creed to New Mexico and Los Angeles, a fortune haunts a romance that ended with his suicide in Los Angeles last week.
Cleveland July 14 The fate of the coal strike hinges on miners persuading De Armitt and other operators to join a broader stoppage. Operators report ample coal and declining prices amid possible closures. Wheeling & Lake Erie notes reduced rail traffic and higher coal prices. In Ohio Jackson County operators post to meet miners wage terms as the strike lingers.
In Piitsburg district miners press for 10 cent per ton raise as strikes spread to Beaver and Mercer counties. Local meetings at Banning Fayette City and West Newton vow no return to work without explicit orders. National UMW leader M D Ratchford due for arbitration talks in Pittsburgh.

Monongahela region shows 7,000,000 bushels while Clearfield district offers ready demand with stable prices. Real run quotations range from $1.25 to $1.50. Monday sales hit $1.50.
Chicago July 14 Union National Bank president J W Ella worth says the strike may last six weeks. He blames the New York and Cleveland Gas Coal company for price manipulation and argues miners and operators may endure a longer fight to force changes. He predicts resumed work then fresh trouble as the company seeks to hold wages down. Also reports two divorce cases in district court with spouses charging mistreatment. Herman Johnson sues Lottie Johnson and Mrs Lowe McKenzie sues Frank McKenzie, citing earlier marriages.
Delegates at the National League of Republican Clubs in Detroit debated league leadership and the next convention site while planning a lake excursion. Contending slates named L J Crawford Dowling and Fred W Ficitz for president with Dowling again as secretary. A. M. Higgins pressed Indiana for the Terre Haute ticket as the party's strength grows.
The report notes Leonard J. Crawford of Kentucky as a typical young Republican in the New South. W. W. In Danville on July 14, 400 to 500 Belgian strikers and foreign workers gathered at the Pawnee mine. Colored miners were attacked as they reached the top of the shaft, with knives and clubs used. A defender fired a revolver, several shot wounds reported, and later strikers fired on a Chicago Eastern Illinois train carrying miners, with about 50 shots exchanged. One miner reportedly killed.
Crawford of Kentucky was elected president of the Republican National League. The committee on place and time of the next convention has selected Omaha for the gathering to be held next. Detroit was noted in the dispatch as a recent meeting location.
Washington July 4 The comptroller reports the failure of the Nebraska National Bank of York Neb Its capital was 5000 and deposits last reported at 7000 The bank owed 13001 borrowed money and had total deposits of 37000 according to its final report
Des Moines July 14 Governor Drake sustained a hip injury after a fall on the capitol steps. The hip had been penetrated by a bullet in the war and a severe blow there may prove dangerous according to his physician.
Booth Tucker, head of the Salvation Army in the United States, visited Topeka to tour semi arid lands in Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico. He outlined a plan to establish colonies for the deserving poor funded by private capital, with small farms and homes sold at nominal prices, aiming to solve social and immigration issues. He predicted government backing, agricultural support, and widespread colonization, while contrasting it with Debs and advocating cooperative ownership without state control.
