Michigan Governor Pingree delivers welcome to Detroit for the Tenth Annual National League of Republican Clubs convention. Washington officials were notified to seek Comptroller of the Currency approval. If approved, the National Bank of Commerce would rank among the west’s strongest, with assets over 14 million dollars and no major capital increase. Officers include J. B. Armour president W. H. Winants vice president L. J. Prindle cashier. Directors encompass S. H. Armour W. K. Kendall John F. Mulvane George W. Fuller Richard H. Keith L. F. Prindle A. R. Moyer A. F. Commander Booth Tucker, head of the Salvation Army in the United States, called on President McKinley at the White House with an introduction from Vice President Holmrt ith. The talk centered on the army's work and a planned large scale expansion to aid destitute urban poor, with the president expressing interest.
Four thousand dollars contributed to the Jewish Orphan Asylum of the Independent Order of B Nai Brith in Cleveland Ohio. The annual commencement was held there on July 13. Fifty five children graduated and eleven orphans were admitted. Trustees announced an endowment of four thousand dollars from Mrs Herman Black of this city. Officers were re elected.

Bicycle Thief Sent to Penitentiary New York July W James Quinlan who broke into the store of A H Wilcox in Brooklyn was sentenced to nine years at Sing Sing Quinlan was indicted for burglary in the third degree. At his trial, I was shown that he stole three bicycles, removed the name plates and sold them. He is believed to have been a member of a gang of bicycle thieves who have Operetell extensively. In Vancouver on July 13 W. S. Immel fatally shot his fiancée Kitty Askew then killed himself after a quarrel at her boarding house. Neighbors heard the quarrel and shots as the couple moved from room to room, with Immel shooting through the breast and throat. Immel, a steady blacksmith, died instantly.
In Los Angeles on July 18 Nicholas Creede a wealthy owner of Creede Colorado killed himself with morphine after his estranged wife who had accepted a cash settlement and left, returned seeking reconciliation. The couple had separated in January and planned divorce. Their 2 year old adopted child remains with friends at Escondido as Mrs Creede blocks contact.
New York July 1 The heat is nearly unbearable with morning 50 degrees rising to 89 by noon and humidity making air feel like a wet sponge. Prostrations and two deaths are blamed on the heat while a strange incident features Helen Murphy entering a wagon, undressing, and sitting on a cake of ice costing her $3 in the Yorkville Sun.

Leavenworth July 13 The three coal mines in the city are operating at near full capacity all summer and have not been touched by the strike. Operators say there will be trouble here but miners express no interest in a sympathy strike. They deem it foolish to quit while eastern miners have struck in past years. Local miners say they are satisfied with current conditions and see no risk of trouble this year.
Knoxville July 12 Authentic reports from the Jeffico coal mining district say over 2,000 miners are idle since May 1 and facing destitution rumors that proved unfounded. Operators wish to suspend through summer due to low prices and show indifference to a wage scale agreement.
Taflanapelia July 12 Gov Mount expressed sympathy with the miners in the dispute with operators and said he is examining his authority as chief executive to intervene. If feasible he will appoint a commission after a committee report from those in contact with the strikers. The governor dislikes the pluck me stare.
