The Spanish admiral Cervera surrendered to Commodore Wainwright who was aboard the American ship at Havana when it sank, avenging the Maine incident.
From Kingston Jamaica July 5 Associated Press reports Admiral Cervera's fleet fought fiercely near Santiago de Cuba before surrendering to the Gloucester. The battleships Infanta Maria Teresa Vizcaya Oquendo and Cristobal Colon were destroyed or scuttled, with only one American casualty. Cervera and officers were taken aboard the Gloucester as prisoners of war while Cuban danger loomed on shore.
American squadron including Brooklyn Massachusetts Texas Oregon and Iowa chased Spanish fleet from Morro to open sea after Cervera’s breakout attempt. Glou cester torpedo boat destroyers Furor and Pluton were sunk or driven ashore while Infanta Maria Teresa Visaya and Oquendo faced withering fire.
Washington July 5 will be no bombardment of Santiago this day and possibly not this week. Cabinet members, in leav ing the White House, say it would be unwise to assault with present forces. Shafter reports Pando with about 6 000 reinforcements in the city raising Spanish strength to 16 000 to 18 000.
New York report details General Anderson a veteran commander in the Fourteenth Infantry. From enlistment as private in Company A Sixth Infantry to lieutenant colonel and colonel, he served in multiple regiments including Twenty first Twenty second Nith and Tenth Infantry. He earned major and then lieutenant colonel for gallantry at Wildernesse and Hootsylvepia. Gen Anderson’s son Thomas MW Anderson served in Kirie cath United States infantry at Bantiago.
Washington reports Secretary Alger says the president urged Admiral Lampoon and General Shafter to confer before any bombardment of Santiago. Troop reinforcements will move immediately to strengthen Shafter, aiming for a decisive victory, with discussions on admiralty safety and anticipated actions once consent is reached.
The Spanish Admiral Cervera gives his first and only comment to an Associated Press correspondent aboard the Ueship lone. He says he would rather lose ships at sea than surrender in a harbor, calling that the only remaining option for him and his sailors.
A Manila dispatch dated July 2 reports Capt Gen Augusti commanding a sortie to repair the walled city aqueduct. Insurgents clash with troops. Spanish commander orders return to Manila. Casualties claimed include fifty or more killed and wounded amid heavy fighting.
Port Said on July 5 reports the Spanish fleet led by Admiral Camara entering the canal. Ships listed include Pelayo Carlos Vis Patrista Rapido Buenos Ayres Isle le Paunay San Francisco Tha de Luson San Augustin and San Tenicio de Loyolt. Wipedo boats accompany the fleet being ordered to Messina Sicily.
Hong Kong reports Rear Admiral Dewey was informed the Spanish fleet sailed through the Suez Canal. The garbled dispatch mentions conditions, a weathered battle scene, and confusion in the naval theater with unclear timing and locations.
