The session opened with 100 members sworn in as Democrats balk at pledging to Republican candidates for speaker or other offices. The House debated alliances while the Senate chamber held 36 members, with Burke opposing Hanna and Voight. Despite friction, votes leaned toward the Republican slate as duties of leadership and seating arrangements unfolded amid mounting attendance and a ceremonial procession.

Port Townsend reports the steamer Corona returning from Alaska carried about 1,260,000 in gold dust and nuggets guarded by two watchmen. San Francisco figures suggest 1,010,000 was brought by miners, with additional wealth stored in drafts and dust aboard. Captain Carroll assisted in viewing the treasure.
Washington January 3 a bold autograph collector in a small Pennsylvania town tried to obtain the president's signature by sending a 40 cent check payable to William McKinley President. Private Secretary Porter routed the check to the Treasury Department advising the man to sign as treasurer of the United States to collect the fictional payment.
Jule Hezen refused to reduce alimony for J E Delmas after a yearlong divorce bid. Custody of two children remained with Mrs Delman as alimony stayed at five dollars a month. Dolman argued potential higher earnings in general practice but judge Hazen upheld the decree. children were returned to the custodial arrangement.
The Indrapore has brought fresh dispatches from Japan. Li Hung Chang is recalled to Pekin to aid the government in a diplomatic crisis while an interior mobilization expands to double the number of boats in Chinese maritime provinces. Some papers predict a partition of China amid rising military and civil tensions.
New York January 2 The Herald reports Li Hung Chang says Germany’s seizure of Kiao Chou violates treaties and international law. He describes the motive as the murder of missionaries and explains China offered punishment and compensation, urging peace and nonaggression while defending territorial integrity and an open commerce frontier.
Frank Lagerstrom at Fourth and Quincy streets reported a burglary last night. Entry through a broken window allowed thieves to steal bed clothes, several trousers, coats, and dresses, while silverware and a gold watch were not taken. Loss estimated by Lagerstrom. Police notified.
