A talk with Mr Hurd reveals how he has been besieged as the legislature distributes hundreds of trip passes for friends and relatives. The expose accuses a group of redeemers of grabbing rail passes and blocking railroad bills, staining Kansas with disgrace.
A Kansas Senate debate over the Garden hire pass bill reveals strong anti pass sentiment. Amid accusations of abuse and kickbacks, supporters push for penalties while opponents question necessity and timing. The measure passes by 21 to 15 after tense votes and procedural challenges.
The Gardenhire anti pass measure, known as the Gardenhire bill, cleared the senate late yesterday after a tense debate. Despite its non partisan intent, Republicans and Populists opposed it, but a partisan majority pushed it forward on third reading amid delays and deferrals.
Lucien Baker, newly elected senator from Kansas, appeared on the senate floor for the first time and was introduced by Mr. Martin who he succeeds. A disorderly scene unfolds in Logan when ex Senator Martin of Bourbon County, now a Kansas state agent, is forcibly removed from the hall by Sergeant-at-Arms Jordan after a dispute over lobby access. The incident, witnessed by several, prompts calls for order as remarks fly about conduct and rules.
The House considers H R 81 8 1 to empower railroad commissioners to fix maximum freight and passenger rates. Opponent Rohrbaugh backs a substitute, while Moore of Saline supports the bill. John H Saunders dies February 27 at Topeka residence. Funeral arrangements and services announced. Queen regent Mapnin suffers a bout of an illness.
