James Dayton, caretaker for Pacific Coast Horax at Furnace Creek, died after traveling toward Daggett on July 24. Relief parties found him August 24 near Ben Nett’s Holes, with six horses perished from heat and thirst. Dayton’s dog survived by staying with him for 30 days. the thermometer reportedly reached 114 degrees. Dayton was over 70 and long familiar with Death Valley travel and routes.
