The Lighthouse Tender Mangrove reports its most significant capture to date, detailing the immense haul secured during a perilous voyage. The crew emphasizes enhanced success and reliability in future operations.
Key West April 3. The steamship Panama and a captured Spanish vessel Mangrove and crew were engaged by US forces near Hispaniola. Ensign Dayton took possession, with Commander Everett reporting prize status to Rear Admiral Sampson. The Panama carried 39 passengers, and questions remain on armament. The Newport and Paquete, plus the frigate Firence, were also detained near Havana. The president issued a proclamation permitting Spanish vessels to enter US waters through May 25 for examination and taxation changes were outlined in the new tariff act.
A Mayday style note reports the cruiser Minn epolia departed the flying squadron from Hampton Meads last Saturday night and failed to appear at Richtund Toleft at 40 p.m. Sighting attempts by incoming steamers from the west and other points this morning found no trace of the vessel.
A cryptic dispatch says the Spanish admiral at St Vincent Cape Verde will sail with the American fleet before Havana under orders or no orders. The message places him near the Cape Verde islands and suggests coordination with the U S fleet.

Kingston Ireland April 34 The mail steamer Ireland plying between this port Holyhead and Liverpool was set to depart today but the commander reported cannot sail due to neutral gravity measures of the government.
Governor Leedy received Secretary Alger's call for Kansas to provide three infantry regiments under the April 25 1898 war mobilization. Kansas listed ready items including Springfield rifles 1400, bayonets 1400, belts 1700, haversacks 1000, canteens 500, knives 800, haversacks complete 1000, uniforms 4900, and blankets 800 among other field equipment.
