Rev Pearse Pinch denounces Governor Morrill for defying local sentiment and threats to enforce prohibition. He warns nullification erodes state authority, urges the governor to resume the scepter or resign, citing civil order, state sovereignty, and historical parallels.
The fish commission expects near doubling of last year’s distribution with about 700 million fish planned. White fish, trout, pike and perch will be planted across the Great Lakes and inland waters from Ohio to Colorado. Leaders Manley and Alshire plan to depart with their spouses and eight others, leaving only eight workers. A large frame hotel in St Joseph was set ablaze by incendiaries early today, guests narrowly escaping in night attire as flames spread from two closets.
Danville Kentucky April 23 Northern and western prospectors flock to Warne county fields miles northeast of town where Standard and other companies hold numerous leases. Early strikes buoy veteran oil men who predict the field soon becomes of national significance extending south from Monticellis 25 miles to the Tennessee line.

Witnesses describe Governor Lewelling Warden Chase and a pardoned convict guiding a party to Arkansas in search of a buried treasure. Geo H. Shonewaldt claimed knowledge of the treasure and asked Hancock to share in riches. Pardon's timing and involvement are disputed amid the Chase investigation.

Representative Lilsworth introduced a bill in the Illinois legislature proposing a trunk waterway linking Lake Michigan through the Illinois and Des Plaines rivers to the Mississippi. The plan would create a through route from the Atlantic seaboard via the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico with specified dimensions and capacity as state policy.
The executive council of the American Federation of Labor met in this city with John Mc Brida in the chair. A sewer was received from Owen Miller, president of the National musicians' association, which meets at Cleveland next Monday, propounding questions about affiliating with the federation. Arguments were heard on differences between the federation and the brewers unions of St Louis and Chicago.
George H. Hall resigned as county collector of Buchanan county after a discovery of about 15 000 short in high counts during his first term. Edward J. Breen appointed successor by Governor Stone. The county court accepted Hall’s new bond and the resignation followed. Bricklayers strike widens with demands and wage offers rejected. Miners at Germania mines strike over rate cut. General Stevenson buried in Peuso Cole with no music or flowers per Mrs Stevenson request.
Kate Field's Washington a weekly paper established by Miss Field will suspend publication until next winter due to ill health of the owner. The note appears in Wasumetos dated April 21.
The U S supreme court ordered rehearing discussions reserved until May 6 before a full bench. Two counsel per side will argue on whether to reopen the case and whether rents are taxable, with Justice Jackson likely presiding virtually. Justice Jackson’s health is improving and he expects to return to the bench.
Dispatches report over 200 of more than 300 Elks lodges in Cleveland endorse Chicago action and plan to send grand lodge members to Buffalo meetings. A Hartford grand lodge member says no legal special meeting can be held without the grand exalted ruler, and none has been called. The annual gathering is set for Atlantic City on July 10 and 11.
