Thousands march from Omaha to Weston Iowa to aid Gen Kelly's commonwealths. city leaders seek railroad support for transport while Gov Jackson weighs options and railroad officials stall. crowds cheer, police curb disturbances as tension rises over crossing the Missouri River.
In Omaha on April 20 the eastern railways pulled engines and cars from Council Bluffs to avert trouble as about 2000 more men crossed the river from Omaha to join a mob marching on Broadway. A Rock Island official near the depot was shot at. the bullet missed.
Dana April 20. Three p. m. One thousand Union Pacific shopmen quit work and marched to Council Bluffs joining a column that crossed in the morning. President Cable of the Hook Island replied that he would not furnish a train to Kelly. OCureado April 20. At western railroad offices, officials denied receipt of telegrams demanding transport for Kelly's army.
Two companies in Sioux City, Iowa, were ordered this afternoon to hold in readiness to move to Council Bluffs. Companies H and L began mustering promptly as of 3 p.m. on April 20.
The Santa Fe General Manager Frey provided a pass to Joseph Younger of Culver, Wyoming, age 91, during a Topeka stop on his Arkansas to Nebraska journey. Younger, older than his name suggests, traveled alone and was shown to the Copeland dinner before meeting Frey at Santa Fe offices. Morgan Dena. Culver, Wyoming, April 20. Hon. E N Mo l ex secretary and acting governor of Wyoming died at home today at 9 o'clock. Deceased was twice a Pennsylvania legislator and was secretary of Wyoming appointed by President Gar y Sand. Brigham book condemned for realism though praised for direct subject.
In Washington on April 20 a thousand laborists from Philadelphia Baltimore New York Boston and Pittsburgh gather to protest the Wilson tariff. Leaders include Harton Barker T W Powderly and A W Wright. Eight hundred more leave Philadelphia to join the march and a petition will be presented to the Senate.
April 20 report from Omawa describes City Council mail debates and threats from Judge Hubbard and Northwestern attorney to halt or disrupt railroad service. Hubbard warns of armed resistance if trains are seized. Chicago officials doubt the danger and call the claims absurd while denying any intent to wreck trains.
Railroad Commissioners rule against A T and Santa Fe Rock Island and Union Pacific over lack of depot connections in Abilene. Freight from Santa Fe and UP was wagoned to Rock Island. order requires track connections by June 20 after hearings and city visit. Rock Island favored link. Santa Fe and UP argued existing Enterprise connection sufficed.
Fire at the Crown Linseed Oil works in St Louis destroys plant machinery and buildings. Loss estimated at $400,000 with about three quarters insured. Ryan company wheat inventory of $10,000 also affected. In a separate case Judge Hiner dismisses a trial. Mean Wee alleged illegal voting and Mason’s army service questioned eligibility.
