Major T. C. Pickering brands the state leader as arrant cowardice in his handling of the law. The open letter accuses the state executive of falsehood for sworn statements and condemns the shifting administration's conduct.
Major L Pickering questions Morrill on enforcement of the prohibit law and cites constitutional clashes. Dr Brumbaugh asserts saloon activity remains open in Atchison Leavenworth and Wichita, challenging Morrill’s stance as collapse of enforcement.
The Wichita Star prints a blistering critique of Governor Morrill and state enforcement of the prohibition law. It accuses police officials of accepting bribes and demands action in Wichita, where two thirds oppose violations. Spanish authorities celebrate, rebels suffer a harsh defeat at Palmarito as 2,000 insurgents face 8,000 Spanish troops in a hand to hand battle. Maceo’s secretary and papers seized, Macoo’s fate sealed, and Morro prison awaits.
In Cincinnati the coal mining strike tightens as miners vow to remove nonstriking workers. Maj. Gen. Prime and Adjutant General Prime have arrived with state militia and requested additional troops from the governor to restore order.
The state executive council met from 9 to 11 this morning to decide whether to keep or remove Mr. T. H. Lescher as state architect. The council split, with Cyrus Leland urging removal and Miller blocking unanimous support from the state boards. Lescher is backed by Captain John Seston and Mike Heery and has majority support on the board. A horse at the fair grounds owned by John Shaw was fatally injured when kicked by another horse and was euthanized by Officer Aye.
A tense scene formed as Senator William Rogers and his lawyers arrived with Judge E Foote and Cy Leland to discuss the probe. The Rogers committee met at the bank commissioner’s office while delays continued from late attendance, with charges and political influence amid rumors of pressure from university ties and Moody’s promised replacement.
The Kansas University Republican club urged ongoing investigation of Regent William Rogers amid accusations of intoxication and obscene language in front of women. A dispatch from Shanghai reports a proclamation bearing the emperor's name declares the empire finished and that he can no longer govern. It accuses trusted officials of corruption, notes great excitement, and signs of rebellion. The document is said to be the work of secret societies.
Rev Frank Mallory of Best Side Christian Church denounces the Queen of Fame event at First Christian on Topeka Avenue as corrupt and unfit for a church setting. He warns such entertainments ruin youth, while a First Christian member defends the production and questions Mallorys motives and understanding.
Fire at Lo'elock spreads from J. W. Watson barn to two city blocks destroying eighteen business houses four residences and about fifteen offices. Estimated loss $200,000 with insurance around ten percent. Ex Chief Bushyhead mansion among total losses. Heavy rain continues in Des Marxs and Indianapolis meeting notes. Diamond cutters face strict surveillance over unfinished stones and theft risk.
Republican city central committee met Saturday evening and adopted a plan to prevent fraud in primaries. It sets weekly registration hours, separate books for men and women, and appoints precinct aides to verify voters, issue certificates, and maintain registries. Helpers work without pay and uncontested voters must be registered to vote. Appeals may go to the city central committee.
A mule hired by the Elks for an advertisement parade caused chaos on Kansas avenue as two young boys and the animal wore elk horns. Police intervened after wagons toppled and bystanders watched Captain Gardiner corral the stubborn animal. The horned mule was later dehorned and returned to the boys.
