Arizona Camels and the Legend of Hi Jolly in Phoenix
Hi Jolly, the Greek camel driver who brought camels to the coast, is in Phoenix recounting a 1855 U S government camel expedition led by Admiral Verter to Asia Minor. Camels used in California, Arizona, and Nevada until 1864 faced harsh terrain, frightened teams, and a dispersed herd. Some were sold to a French buyer, others to the British, with remaining camels to be used between Globe and the Silver King mine before desert disposal. They nearly vanished, though Indians reportedly found and ate one near Yuma.
