Recruiting Party in Tombstone on Campaign Tour

Captain Gtrzew of the First Cavalry with about 25 men arrived in Tombstone from Bisbee, camped at the depot grounds. Nine enlistments were reported in Warren District during their stay, as the six-truck party plans drill exhibitions before departing. The drive aims to recruit for overseas service in Germany and for home duties, with overseas enlistees serving one year or more and one year not eligible for overseas duty.

Automobiles for hire face new state motoring law

Phoenix May 22 A conference of more than 100 representatives of private interests and public officials from across the state discussed administration of a new law regulating motor vehicles plying for hire. The measure, issued by the state corporation commission, becomes effective June 18 with mid night June 17 as the cutoff. Blank license applications would be mailed to owners, and hearings on applications would proceed after the law takes effect to determine status, while the commission would overlook early technical violations. The discussion also touched on curbing closely timed schedule changes by opposition lines.

Western Arizona 18 Passed Up by Rain

The report notes widespread rain across northern, southern, and central Arizona with the western area receiving none. Flagstaff saw a severe storm with thunder and snow in the San Francisco mountains, and up to 0.70 inches of rain fell by six tonight. In Phoenix the day’s rainfall was recorded but incomplete in the dispatch.

Counties to Receive Road Machinery in Arizona Plan

May 22. Lieutenant Maddock outlines federal aid for state and counties to acquire trucks tractors and road building equipment. New four to three ton trucks and additional tractors will be used to accelerate highway work. A meeting with Arizona Mining Congress members confirmed support for permanent through roads and federal funding. Tucson reports 0.02 inches of rain with a storm total of 0.70 inches. Yuma and Needles saw no rain.

Arizona stockmen seek method to handle strays on ranges

In Phoenix on May 22 the livestock sanitary board announced plans to convene cattlemen from Arizona’s regions to resolve ownership disputes over mortarness calves and motherless calves on open ranges. The board noted inspectors have been collecting stray cattle to curb cattle stealing and that some cattlemen claim rights to unbranded stock.

A light quake rattled Flagstaff this morning after a night of rain thunder and snow. No damage reported though the home of C. C. Sampland, an astronomer at Lowell Observatory, was badly shaken.

May 23 reports say keen inspectors and detectives from the livestock sanitary board have been dispatched to Cochise county where cattle rustlers have been active recently. After a harsh winter many calves survived, making them prime targets for thieves.

Salvation Army Fund Drive Begins Monday Campaign

The fundraiser for the Salvation Army starts Monday led by the Etka lodge with local Bisbee lodge members aiding. W. T. Boyd and Dr. Hughart, Elks, are named the committee to handle subscriptions and donations may be left with either member.

Tucson Man Slain in Yaqui Attack on Mine Truck

A band of Yaqui Indians ambushed a La Colorado mine ore truck train from San Navier to Hermosillo, Killing American H S White and several Mexicans. Dyer US consul reports limited details. Wiske survived with one child in Tucson. The mine, owned by W C Leurtiln and KB Schroeter, had not faced prior raids and tribes move through Hermosillo district.

Liberty Highway Aims Through Arizona To Pasadena

Liberty highway promoted by a Quin cy association will run from Atlantic City New Jersey to Pasadena California through Arizona. A letter from Trueman Pierson secretary states the through trunk line will serve motorists and vehicles and be dedicated to liberty and fallen soldiers. Route details to be fixed at sectional convention with a crossing at the Mississippi River near Liberty Illinois.
