Fire Rages At Ajo Water Well Shaft

Fire blamed on crossed wires threatens Ajo water supply and nearby mills nine miles from the city. Workmen spotted smoke at the shaft early yesterday and bulkheads were built. Calumet and Arizona Mining Co helmet crew and two autos from Bisbee were dispatched for aid. No injuries reported. if uncontrolled, local industry would halt.

The Red Cross home service in San Francisco wires local officials that War Department has not yet set a plan for paying the mileage difference after the five cent rate took effect. Do not send claims to the War Department until official notice. Chapters will be informed promptly.

Picture of Dead Body Offered in Phoenix Trial

County attorney Laney introduced photographs of Frank Hoctor's body at the trial of J A Newman, who faces murder charges. The dead man's widow Mrs Hector left the courtroom during identification. Defense objected to the photos as prejudicial, but the judge overruled. Additional images of the scene were partially admitted before the prosecution urged distance details between Newman’s car and Hector’s truck.

Bowie First Town In Cochise County To Reach Quota

Bowie, the first district in Cochise County to reach its $2000 quota, reported to Chairman A. Lockwood that $14,700 had been subscribed and is still growing. Tombstone lags with just over half its quota and under ten days remain to complete it.

Bullet Fired At Bisbee Officer in Street Incident

On May 3 a gunshot rang out while Officer Thomas was patrolling near the Brooks house in Bisbee. He reported hearing a dim report as a Maxim silencer might produce and a bullet struck the wall nearby. A tan-clad man in a white shirt fled after the shot, leaving no clue. Separately, Minor Sime met with state engineers about federal aid for Greenlee county roads.
