Railroads Must Still Pay Crossing Costs in Arizona Decision
Phoenix June 7 The Arizona Corporation Commission ruled that railroads must bear the same proportion of crossing costs. The Cochise county supervisors sought county payment for cattle guards and wing fences, but the commission said statutes require the railroad to cover these expenses. The county covers grading to the rail edges while railroads handle other crossing costs.

Prohibition Debates and Bills in Arizona Legislature
Phoenix June 7 The house refused to accept the senate amendment to the session expense bill and after lengthy debate the measure failed again. Stapley’s prohibition bill passed third reading in the senate but failed by six votes. Sweeney plans a bill to regulate importation of alcohol for medicinal and sacra mental uses. The house sent to the senate a bill increasing Cochise county sheriff salary and a capital punishment bill may be brought up today. Briscoe introduced a bill to create a hospital site for disabled miners with a trustees board. The senate considered Stapley’s prohibition bill and sent it back with amendments. Three Senate groups held different views on alcohol exemptions while Stapley pressed for broader state chemist recommendations. Sweeney’s labor commissioner bill and a public land filing bill creating a state lands department were debated in the house. The land bill would appoint a governor, attorney general, and state engineer as a three member commission with a salary near 1936. The commissioner would oversee state lands, appoint appraisers, and manage land sales for up to five years per tract.
