Milton’s Long Career as Arizona Peace Officer

Jef Milton, one of the oldest operation officials in Arizona, made Naco his base for years of service on the border. A Wells Fargo messenger during a train robbery near Fairbank, he fought the outlaws, was wounded, and helped capture Broncho Bill and his confederates. Born in Louisiana and a Texas ranger by training, Milton later chased bandits north of Clifton, earning a reputation as a veteran peace officer with dramatic frontier exploits.

Surface Road progress near Bisbee with caliche source

Gaines and Gardner visited the voter camp to view the Bisbee Drive project. The end portion of the road to the Government Draw is graded with culverts and concrete finished. A road crew edges toward foothills, locating a caliche quarry and drilling holes for blasting to open the quarry. Caliche will be hauled downhill to surface the road from the quarry to the draw.

Governor denies request for federal troops in Bisbee

Phoenix August 25 the governor stated no request had been made to federal authorities to send troops to Bisbee nor would one be placed today or tonight. It was not admitted if a later contingency might prompt action. Milton wired headquarters requesting a doctor and one com. Milton has long served in U S immigration work with noted efficiency.

Jail sentences for 16 slackers from Arizona

In Prescott federal court sixteen offenders, mostly Mexican, were sentenced for failure to register on June 3. Sentences ranged from one day to nine months, with three to be sent to Los Angeles and another to southern Texas. One man, charged as an alien enemy, will go to Fort Hills.

Delegates Named for Dixie Overland Convention

J Bowen vice president of the Dixie Overland Highway association lists Aricoma delegates for the fourth annual convention at Meridian Mississippi on September 5. Alabama and Mississippi attendees include many named delegates from towns such as Cochise County Douglas Chandler Jerome Nogales and Florence. The governor’s endorsement is sought for the Evergreen highway project spanning coast to coast.

Aug 25 report says Globe Miami Cooks and Waiters Union officials instructed members to refuse service to workers at Old Dominion mine plant. Authorities plan a probe into the order with no reported enforcement yet. If discrimination occurs, action will be taken against the union and the restaurant owner.

The Women’s Loyalty League of America in Bisbee organized at the YMCA gym yesterday and pledged full support to Sheriff Harry C. Wheeler for his deportation actions in Warren District on July 12, 1917. Officers were elected, a constitution adopted, and a committee formed to review rules. At a ranch between Hereford and the Huachuca mountains near Bisbee a Mexican assailed Jack Ashworth and Joseph Halcero, firing twice with a .22 revolver. Ashworth and Halcero were struck in the head but survived. the assailant is believed to be a locally known wood hauler, and sheriff’s deputies are pursuing him.

District Board Reverses Cochise Exemption Cases

Aug 25 Tucson district exemption board, citing new rule that married men are exempt only if families are wholly dependent, reversed 46 Cochise county cases. It also overturned three Cochise refusals. Mr and Mrs A E Davis plan overland return from San Francisco, stopping en route, arriving late September.
