Whiskey Hidden in Lard Cans Foiled by Soldiers
August 1 an attempt to smuggle whiskey from this city to Nacozari Sonora by packing it in lard cans was foiled by United States soldiers on duty at the international line Saturday at noon. Four 50 pound cans were used with hint bottles at the bottom packed in flour. The top was coated with lard to pass as lard. A soldier opened a can and stabbed the coating with a bayonet revealing the deception. About four cases of whiskey, a cheap brand, were seized and held at the American customs house pending investigation. It is believed the liquor was hidden to fool Mexican authorities who oppose imports. The goods were brought to the line in an ante truck. A soldier spoilt the plan while seeking ammunition by bayoneting the hampered can.
