Supreme Court rules Jamaica ginger is illegal liquor

The court upheld a Gra ham county conviction for selling Jamaica ginger with 91 percent alcohol. It held the liquor cannot be sold as a medicine or under any supervision. the statute is suppression not regulation and remains outlawed despite claims of medicinal use. The decision notes good faith sales cannot excuse the conduct.

April 19 the state council of defense relayed a national call urging county councils to help complete occupational index cards for men enrolled in the draft. Until transcription is finished, the army loses skilled workers. Local boards are urged to report needed assistants. teachers have offered aid. The matter is deemed extremely urgent.

New Cornelia Largest Grusher in Arizona

The New Cornelia works plans to process 5,000 tons daily in a 10 hour shift and develop sulphide ore and a reverberatory furnace smelter to produce copper from concentrates. The Reiniger Freeman vein samples 60 ounces silver and 5 dollars in mova on the 208 level. Dos Cabezas contract calls for 75 tons per day of fair grade copper ore with possible custom work. William Kemp of Tuc-ena is hired as ore buyer. Native copper found in Queen mine of Twin Buttes district, a mineralised zone about 25 feet wide.

G L ane returns from the Black Prince mine in the Sierra Blancas about 87 miles west of Tucson and 40 miles from Ajo. Schwamm Arrested for Violation of Espionage Act

Douglas April 20 William E Schwamm after being dismissed from jury service was arrested by Justin C Daspit of the department of justice and held on $10000 bail for a preliminary hearing before United States Commissioner H C Beumler next Thursday John Moher and H Rivers posted his bond Schwamm is accused of violating the espionage act by making seditious utterances The specific charges have not been revealed and will not be available until the hearing A local attorney stated Schwamm did not directly purchase a bond during the second Liberty loan drive but took a $50 bond from a smokerman who owed him $40 and threatened to garnishee the wages

Tombstone set to rise again with copper ore work

Phoenix April 20. Copper Queen company at Bisbee rapidly removes overburden on Sacramento hill as preparatory to large concentrating operations. Phelps Dodge closes the Bunker Hill mill at Tombstone and sinks a development shaft to gauge ore extent. A test mill will be built at Douglas to determine treatment methods for manganese and silver deposits, with Tombstone potentially gaining renewed life if a workable process is found.

Legislature Calls Special Session in May Twenty One

Phoenix April 19 Governor Hunt issued a proclamation convening the legislature in special session on May 21. The agenda includes voting rights for Arizona soldiers, care of dependents, legalizing the Arizona Council of Defense, investing funds in Liberty bonds, Americanization, dairy legislation, prohibition and woman suffrage, reimburse Governor Campbell, and Secretary McAdoo spoke to a large crowd before departing to Grand Canyon and Albuquerque.
