In a windy week game Titonka fell to Ledyard 7 to 6 with Irvin Gleaking going 3 for 3 and Bob Pink 2 for 3. Warner pitched for Ledyard and Pami Brung also starred for Titonka in a close late affair.
A preliminary meeting of turkey raisers in Algona last Thursday planned a December turkey banquet where a district turkey growers association will be formed. Chester Bohkoby of Algona led the gathering and will announce the date for the next meeting.
A large group gathered Sunday at the home of Mrs. Fred Gerdes to celebrate her birthday. Attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gerdes and family, Mr. and Mrs. George T. Gerdes and family, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gerdes and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Gerdes and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Gerdes and sons, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Res, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gerdes, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Tweedt and family, and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Tweedt.
While shelling corn at Mrs Mary Otis farm last Friday the tractor exhaust ignited corn husks causing brief excitement. Men quickly fought the blaze with water from a tank and extinguished it.
On Thursday October 3 a demonstration of a farm water system was held at the Zwiefel home near Titonka CG. Van Vinck of Town Extension Service Ames led the event with a large county crowd observing and participating. The system included a deep well pressure pump for regular supply, a shallow well pressure unit connected to a cistern for soft water, and a heating tank near the furnace for hot water. future plans call for a bathroom to be added.

Doege farm near Titonka saw a blitz like plowing when Carl Harms gathered seven tractors to finish 35 acres in five and a half hours. Ralph Harms Jesse Harms John Harms Harley Boeckholt Herb Rakow and Frank Hauptley assisted driving the work in a rapid fall plowing effort next year to a tenanted plot now occupied by George Dirksen.
Immanuel Lutheran Church invites attendees to a Thursday October 10 afternoon service and meal featuring creamed peas potatoes gravy salad cranberries pie coffee cake priced at 15 to 50 cents. The notice uses fragmented OCR but lists a community meal and prices and invites all to attend.
The double funeral for Marvin Herman Schutter, 11, and Leanna Beverly Schutter, 3, held at Immanuel Lutheran Church after a September 23 auto crash near Buffalo Center. Obituary prayers cited, with family: parents Mr and Mrs William Schutter, siblings, and extended relatives.
The library now offers evening hours from 7 to 8 40. A winter weather note makes the hours more accommodating to the public. The library board held a quarterly meeting on Tuesday evening with three board members and the librarian present. The meeting date was changed to the first Monday of each quarter. New board members are Mrs. H I Torgersen and Mary Qoisterreicher, succeeding Fred Hagen and Howard French.
Roy J. Henderson of Emmetsburg was found guilty by a jury of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Kossuth District Court. He has until October 10 to file a motion for a new trial. if not done, sentencing is at 2 p.m. The trial marks the first jury case of the term, opened last Tuesday, linked to the June 16 Wasbey accident near Wasley. Other docket items include a false pretenses case against C. Riddle, preliminary hearing for J W Foster, and various fines and a divorce decree granted in Bancroft. Members of the Titonka Woman's Club and the Titonka Junior Federated Club attended the county club meeting in Swea City last week, clarifying which local clubs were represented at the gathering.
Registration for all men aged 21 to 36 set for October 16, 1940 across Iowa. Polling places, Legion Hall in Tonka, open 7 am to 9 pm. Penalties include fine up to 10,000 or five years' imprisonment for noncompliance or false registration.
Kossuth County residents will vote in the general election on November 6 on building a new courthouse costing $300,000. Votes will be on a separate ballot with a required 60 percent majority. The current courthouse dates from 1872.
The fifth case of infantile paralysis reported in Kossuth county is Helen Becker a 13 year old girl daughter of Mr and Mrs Anton Becker farmers near St Joe.
A Kossuth county corn husking contest is planned with the winner advancing to the district contest in Hampton on October 22. Entries are due October 12 at the Algona Chamber of Commerce office. Droest Heidecker, last year’s winner, returns as the tenth contestant. County is divided into three sections for entry, with prizes for the top three huskers.
Four hundred stockholders and patrons attended the IK. & H. Co-Operative Oil Company annual meeting at Kleinpeter hall. Members from Corwith Titonice Woden Burt Bancroft Irvington and Wesley were represented. The firm has grown from one town to eight towns with sales rising from 48000 to 201000 and employees from six to fifteen.
Installation of the underground cable by the local telephone exchange is near completion. Boril Grimm of Des Moines completed the splicing over the weekend. Everett Rippentrap and Wayne Hagen did the digging. Wires will be connected over the next three weeks, linking all north town phones to a metallic circuit, reducing wind and storm interferences.
A Lone Rock resident A. H. Hanna is hospitalized in Kosauth hospital Algona with rib and chest injuries after his car collided with a gravel truck driven by Roy Neurroth of Algona seven miles northwest of Algona on Saturday afternoon. The car was damaged.
Mrs John Krull, 72, died Friday evening after a prolonged illness. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with Rev W L Patterson in charge. She leaves two daughters and four sons, and was active in church life. Born October 5, 1868 in Adeline Illinois, she married John Krull November 2, 1888 and lived in the area since 1901.
The Buffalo Consolidated School teachers and Lions Club wives will be guests at a Thursday evening luncheon at the Methodist church. Mr and Mrs Freak W Senn eff of Britt will show Alaska trip movies, Miss Patty Sennett will perform on the Marimba, the Gayner better boys will sing, and R J Fritsen of Garner will lead community singing.
Cars driven by Mrs Art Wilden and Hlmer Ludwig collided at an intersection five miles south and three miles west of Algona Saturday. The cars were damaged but the occupants escaped injuries.
