Contouring Cuts Down Soil Loss and Boosts Yields
A 1943 44 study by the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station and Soil Conservation Service at Clarinda shows contour farming reduces runoff and soil loss. In 1944 rainfall reached 39.24 inches with runoff 11.2 percent on up and down plots versus 5.6 percent on contoured plots, and soil loss fell from 51.5 to 10.2 tons per acre. Two-year corn yield averaged 72.9 bushels managed by contouring.
