Formation of the American Society for the Control of Cancer
On May 22 1913 distinguished doctors and lay persons formed the American Society for the Control of Cancer. Delegates from ten medical societies gathered to educate on symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention and to compile cancer statistics. The society, incorporated in 1922, has boosted physician involvement and clinic approvals while lay education lags. Dr Bloodgood noted five year cure rates rose after 1920 where education was strongest, underscoring public education as essential until a cure or prevention is found. The society launched the Womens Field Army to build an enlightened lay network promoting cancer control methods, inviting public enlistment with a one dollar yearly fee or smaller contributions. This marks the first regular enlistment of women in this fight, a war to save lives.

Corporations Increase Land Holdings in Iowa
Corporations sold 616000 acres of farm land in Iowa from January 1935 to January 1987 but acquired about 1 million more, ending with 386000 acres more than in 1938. Iowa State College surveys show by January 1937 corporations held 11.2 percent of Iowa farmland. Foreclosures and sales rates suggest the period of corporate ownership could persist for years, influenced by farm income and mortgage terms.
