Iowa Sees 1937 Soybeans Boost Driven by Mills and Soil Health

Iowa State College officials project planting a million acres of soybeans in 1937, up 500000 from 1936, due to hay needs and strong regional demand from six soybean mills with a six million bushel capacity. Soybeans yield about five tons per acre for hay and 18 to 35 bushels per acre for threshing, with 60 percent of crop typically cut for hay. Central and northwestern counties, prone to erosion, are best suited, avoiding areas where erosion is a major risk. Prices average $1.20 to $1.30 per bushel, yet processor prices depend on oil and meal values.
