Spring Crafting Curiosities and Garden Questions
Field notes from Blue Earth columnist Susan Frawley Eisele reveal spring moods as she paints a wastebasket and a typewriter stand with flat black, ponders bright decorations, and asks readers for a ship wreck recipe. She muses on trains, dogs, blue road water, sweet potato vines, and a stray plant spree while noting corn yield data and hog market forecasts.
Plan to Certify Healthy Swine In Iowa
Plan announced March 15 by the Towa Purebred Swine Council outlines a health-certification program for breeders. It aims to build a backlog of health-certified herds and promote sanitary practices while distributing certified breeding stock. Dr. Maynard L. Spear of Iowa State leads applications with 400 veterinarians as inspectors.

Swine Council program requires two consecutive satisfactory inspections
The program for health-certified herds demands two consecutive satisfactory inspections by veterinarians not regularly employed by the herd owner. To keep the rating, owners must submit further herd inspections about every six months. Dr Spear notes expansion as producer interest grows, and the Purebred Swine Council may regulate the use of the health certified rating in breeders' advertising.

First true white finish for fiberglass fabric claimed
The finish is hailed as the first true white coating for fiberglass Marquisette, improving soil resistance and fabric strength. Fiberglass yarns retain proper ties, resist sun and moisture, and do not stretch or burn. Curtains stay crisp and cleaner longer, and can be hand washed and rehung quickly without ironing, avoiding stretching or starching.
