Dual Purpose Cattle Fit Mid Sized Iowa Farms Says Peters
W H Peters chief of the Division of Animal Husbandry at the University of Minnesota told Iowa farmers at Farm and Home Week that dual purpose cattle suit middle sized farms of 160 to 320 acres without enough labor or equipment for many dairy cows. He said dairy cattle fit high priced land with intensive methods, beef cattle fit low priced land with extensive production, and selection is about adaptation. Dual herd care should resemble dairy herds with milkings limited to twice daily to maintain true dual purpose animals and a yearly herd butterfat average of 200 to 300 pounds per mature cow.
