Garden Campaign in Sixty Three Counties

Extension horticulturists J G Cunningham and W Edgecomb report Iowa gardeners across 63 counties have embraced home gardening this year. They have met 2120 leaders to discuss organizing garden programs and vegetable culture, with leaders passing advice to interested residents.

Garden project aims to feed unemployed families in many counties

A large central garden will be tended to grow vegetables for canning and storage for distribution next fall and winter. In some counties towns provide plots for each unemployed family, while others offer garden space or assistance from county officials. Reconstruction funds Red Cross and similar support fund seed distribution with welfare groups cooperating. The campaign’s second phase starts this month with meetings to address planting, soil weed and pest control. Canning and storage demos will be offered by horticulture and nutrition specialists during summer and fall.
