Staff Sergeant George Schmidt Jr. arrived home on a 30 day leave to his parents Mr and Mrs George Schmidt. He flew back to the States and will report at Jefferson Barracks after leave. Schmidt went to England in March, served less than three months, flying five missions.
On the fourth his plane was shot down over Bremen on April 7. Seven crew members were killed and two seriously injured. George Schmidt escaped with minor injuries, parachuted to safety, and was rescued by the British army. He is the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Schmidt. his brother Herold is in pre flight school at San Antonio. George trained at Tyndall Field Florida. A brother in law Carlyle Biehm is in the Mariannas.
Twenty registrants left by bus Friday for preinduction examinations at Fort Snelling. They will return to await calls for induction into the armed forces unless reclassified or rejected. Official notices indicate seven Kossuth service members remain missing with next of kin informed. Names include Lt Alvin Bronbach La Verne Lt Wayne Bjustrom Pvt Dora Thompson Leroy Dale Algona Lt Julius Kunz Wesley S-Set James Ley La Kota and Cpl Wilmer Webber Whittemore. The list remains complete as of V E Day though later reports show others captured or prisoners later liberated before notice.
Funeral services for Mrs John Ruoss were held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church in Woden with Rev H Kruse officiating. She died at her home near Crystal Lake on Wednesday May 30 at age 78 after a lingering illness. Surviving are her husband John Ruess two sons Otto and Albert at home and a daughter Nora of Phoenix Arizona. Two brothers Gustav and Henry, both of Waukon Iowa, also survive.
A study by Emerson W. Bird at Iowa State College finds butter from Iowa stores shows higher vitamin A content in July to September, with 63 percent of annual production in these months. Researchers urge winter feeding research, hay curing, and silage to preserve carotene and vitamin A, noting forage varieties and plant breeding impact vitamin value and yield.
Mr and Mrs Herman Nietzel hosted a Memorial day family gathering at their home in Lone Rock. Attendees included relatives from Griden Minneapolis Lakota Bancroft Lake Crystal Bancroft and nearby areas, with multiple families and children visiting from Wednesday to Sunday.
Lakota's T-Sgt. Cecil Peterson, first Lakota to be released by the point system, entered service in January 1940 at Des Moines, trained in San Francisco, deployed to Honolulu then the South Pacific, served until September 28, 1944, returned to the United States in October 1944, served in Yuma, Arizona, and was released May 7 at St. Louis.

Lieut Willard Schwietert returns from Europe on a 30 day furlough to visit relatives in the Burt area. The B24 navigator, overseas since last June, has completed his missions and will report for reassignment in Los Angeles after the furlough. He stays with his sister Mrs Vernell Huardgreve and other kin in Titonia and Ellensburg, Wash.
The American Legion Auxiliary of Algona thanks Koscius County residents for support in a magazine drive. Six portable wheel chairs were bought and will be kept at Algona Laverne Bancroft Swea City Titonica for loan at no charge except transportation. Chairs arrive soon and will be available for free use.
Kossuth county ranks fifteenth in the state for waste paper collection, with a report dated May 17 showing 160000 pounds gathered in April, reaching 127 percent of the county quota as residents urged to serve country by joining WAVES.
Mary Ellen Hesse daughter of Mr and Mrs Earle Edward Hesse of Chicago married Leroi Tupats son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Loats of Titonka in a 4 clock Saturday afternoon June 2 ceremony at the chapel of Dubuque University. Rev C Vin White officiated. The altar featured yellow and white flowers. The bride was given in marriage. Attendants included Miss Virginia Rummel and best man Pfd Clarence Loats. Ushers were listed.
George Swalve a friend and Frank Hesse brother of the bride attend the ceremony. The bride wore white moire taffeta with illusion veil, carried a white Bible with an orchid and sweet pea spray, and a groom gifted the Bible. Bridesmaid in yellow net carried a white lavender pale green colonial bouquet. Dinner for 28, out of town guests listed. After a short honeymoon, the couple will reside in Monroe, Wisconsin on June 10.
The American Legion Auxiliary holds a Burt county meeting at the Legion hall Tuesday afternoon June 12. District president Mrs Larr y Bilsworth from Emmetsburg and district president elect Mrs Ray Strate from Garner will attend. state president Mrs Leo Laird from Rockwell City may also be present. Officers to be elected, good attendance hoped, lunch to follow.

Good Hope Lutheran Church announces a Thursday afternoon program to close this year’s vacation Bible school with an Achieve ment Program. Divine worship at 10 30 AM and Sunday School at 9 30 AM. No Bible class this Sunday. Tuesday staff meeting June 12. Choir rehearsal canceled this week.
Three new Wayne Body Co busses built on Chevrolet chassis arrived in Titonia after a trip from Richmond Indiana. Each carries 42 passengers, features leather upholstery, super heaters, and welded steel bodies. Local district may keep three or possibly four on duty, with one bus possibly serving outside pupils.

Miss Shirley Bruns daughter of Mr and Mrs H A Bruns marries Staff Sergeant Nick A Reef son of Mr and Mrs J P Reef in a double vinyl ceremony May 26 at Holy Family church Mason City. Attendants Mary Bruns and Ivan Sherman. The bride wore a white organza gown with long train and orange blossoms. Breakfast followed at Hotel Hanford for relatives and friends. Out of town guests included Roy Sherman Austin Horace Schenck Crystal Lake and others. Reef is from Granville Iowa and is a military air corps veteran.
William Mayland, the first Titonka man discharged on the point system, served four years and a month with 93 points. He was overseas 35 months in England, Africa, Italy, France and Germany, awarded two battle stars, and recently with Fort Riley Kansas. He is the son of Mrs. Henry Schmidt and, while grateful to be home, he prefers not to return to Europe.
Dorothy Hydecker and Donald Ward were married at St. Paul's Lutheran church in Renwick at 3 30 PM Saturday. Rev Huck officiated a double ring ceremony with Marilyn Payne playing the wedding march. The bride wore white satin and carried red roses and white carnations. Lydia Groh served as maid of honor in pale blue. Dorothy Haag was bridesmaid in yellow. Janice Kraft was flower girl. Gary Kraft was ring bearer. A reception followed at the church parlors and a wedding dance in Livermore that night.
