Apples Too Thick on Some Trees
Farmers planning to sell apples this fall are advised to thin heavily loaded trees. Thinning won’t raise bushels but will improve size and quality for a better market price. Thin only heavily loaded trees and keep fruit 6 to 8 inches apart. Remove fruit by grasping stem and lifting away, avoiding the fruit spur. Thinning reduces breakage, lowers harvest costs, and helps winter hardiness. A Davis City storm destroyed a tree yet left a Baltimore circle nest intact.
