Iowa Farmers Buy Few Feeder Pigs
Iowa farmers purchased 22 732 feeder pigs from outside the state in the first half of the year, down from 50 838 in the same period in 1924, per the Iowa Department of Agriculture. Home raised pigs met demand as corn crop was light and hog supply abundant. 1924 Iowa pig sales exceeded 13.7 million. A tri-state 1924 spring farrowing fell 20 percent, though about 89 percent as many pigs were saved due to favorable weather and feed. Fall farrow intentions show similar sow numbers to last year.
