Nomadic youth in a Southampton mystery unfolds
A twenty three year old vagrant named Duke Barry Gilbert enters an empty Southampton summer home to ride out a storm. He learns the owner’s son Jack Ridder was expected but never seen. Barry improvises a stay, discovers a letter from Jack, pockets a hundred dollars, and plans to vanish. He later encounters Judge Hambidge, Patricia, and a web of murders, lawsuits, and a disguise involving Jack Ridder. Barry assumes a new role at the Globe and is drawn into the Ridder-Kelly case.
