Familiars visit notes and local social events in Algona area
A dense column lists visits, family gatherings, and social activities across Algona, Des Moines, Hopkinton, Wellsburg, Britt, Woden, and surrounding towns. It records weekend trips, Christmas visits, hospital uses, club meetings, and a police–road incident near Portland township, highlighting residents and kin from multiple households.
Participating Christmas Teaches Family Lesson
A family argues over a silver trimmed Christmas tree as 7 year old Sally fixates on a homemade red paper silhouette. The parents realize Sally’s involvement matters more than store bought sparkle and invite her to help with a new centerpiece. The tale ends with Sally guiding guests to admire her work, not the tree.

Hybrids Boost Sweet Corn Yields and Planting Plans
Researcher Haber at Iowa State College reports hybrids can boost sweet corn yields by up to 30 percent and offer uniform maturity. Tests at the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station identify hybrids like Logien and Togent series adapted to Iowa conditions. Planting date affects maturity. May plantings reach maturity later than June plantings, requiring staggered sowing for steady canning supply.

Hybrid Water Melons Are Highly Promising
Towa State College announces the world first commercial hybrid watermelon. Head of botany I W K Methus says the melon is a true hybrid created by crossing inbred lines. Wilt resistance and quality are strong, with field tests showing 75 to 80 percent wilt resistance and higher yields than Keckley No 6. Only 30 pounds of hybrid seed exist, reserved for grower trials this year. If seed production lowers costs, hybrid melons may become common in 1942.

Legacy oats discouraged in Iowa by expert guidance
Iowa agricultural advisor L. G. Burnett cautions farmers about a touted Canadian seed oat called Legacy. In 13 Canadian tests from 1935 to 1939 Legacy yielded 638.6 bushels per acre versus 72.4 for Gopher and 71.1 for Vanguard, and Legacy shows susceptibility to crown rust stem rust and smuts while Gopher and Vanguard resist rust. Legacy matures 2 to 3 days later, and Canadian seed oats often fail to suit Iowa conditions. Supplies of feed grain per animal remain slightly higher this year.
