Will Demonstrations of Water Systems for Farms
Van Vinck of Iowa State College Extension explains affordable running water setups for farm homes. He cites a septic tank value under ten dollars and urges rural households to plan for future electrical needs as demonstrations prepare two county installations in RoSouth County with multiple families involved to learn installation steps.

Trees for soil defense to curb Iowa erosion in 1939
Iowa State College and the Soil Conservation Service will plant 1,472,360 trees on state farms next spring. Black locusts will dominate 656,000 plants to heal gullies, with conifers and hardwoods including western yellow pine, Scotch pine, jack pine, green ash, black walnut and oaks supplementing wildlife food and cover. Projects span Shenandoah, McGregor, Marion, Knot- Wille, and Greenfield on five areas and 17 CCC camps.

Number and Usefulness of Tractors Gaining in Farm Power
Iowa State College researchers analyzed cost records from over 1700 Iowa farms to compare tractors with horses. They found initial savings limited by equipment duality, but after four years a general purpose tractor reduced costs per crop acre by about three dollars and correlated with larger livestock herds.
Farm costs and yields by equipment type in corn production
For horse farms the cost to produce an acre of corn amounted to $165.04, for those using a four general purpose tractor two years or less $15.01, and on farms using a general purpose tractor four years or more $12.17. Crop yields were about the same on both horse and tractor farms, though in some cases there was a trend toward higher yields on the tractor-operated farms.
Dairymen Solving Light Oats Feeding Problem This Winter
Iowa dairymen facing a major winter feeding issue can adapt by adjusting dairy rations to handle extra bulk from light oats. ISU extension dairyman Floyd Arnold notes light oats contain less nutrients and more fiber, suggesting two options: use ground corn instead of corn and cob meal, or mix by volume if corn is scarce. Proposed rations mix ground corn, ground oats, cracked soybeans, and alfalfa hay or silage, with protein boosts if non-leguminous roughage is used, and allow feeding at about 1 pound of feed per 3 pounds of milk depending on cow production.

Too Many Soybeans Damage to Pork
Experiments from Iowa State College show feeding soybeans beyond seven and a half percent of the diet yields softer carcasses in pigs. Four pens tested various protein levels and found only soy amounts at or below 7.5 percent produced firm, satisfactory carcasses. The study used corn, mineral mix, and rape pasture, with varied soybean and tankage supplementation. Milk is noted as valuable for laying hens. Read the Want Ads.

Rations for laying hens maximize feed value and health
Poultry experts at Town State College propose balanced rations combining whole grains with a laying mash. Recommend evening grain fed plus lighter morning amounts, plus milk, oilmeal, alfalfa, bone meal, and oyster shell. Variations adjust for available feed and milk.

Feeding Regimen for 100 Hens Clarified
The guidance states that one gallon of liquid milk per day to 100 hens may be omitted. If 2 to 3 gallons are fed daily to 100 hens, then half of the feeds marked A and B may be omitted.
