Iowa State expert William Zmolek outlines a self feeder system to reduce waste when creep feeding calves. He advises wide overhanging cages to shed rain, an adjustable grain opening from 1 to 4 inches, and a 10 foot feeder for 40 to 50 calves. Fence openings should be 16 inches apart with a 10 foot clearance around the feeder. Do not let the feeder run dry, keep feed fresh, and avoid sudden diet changes. Creep feeding is profitable for producers selling calves as feeders or finishing soon after weaning.
