Orchardist Advice Tops Catalog in Selecting Home Fruit
Iowa State College horticulturist H. E. Nichols advises home orchardists to rely on local experience and county extension lists rather than nurseryman catalogs. He recommends planting one variety per fruit type, highlights Cumberland black raspberry, Latham red raspberry, Coma gooseberry, Red Lake currant, and Dunlap strawberry, and suggests Concord for grapes with several other good options to extend ripening. Nichols also notes cross pollination needed for plums, favors Minnesota varieties in north Iowa, and urges varied ripening times and section-appropriate apple planting with 25 to 75 percent summer and fall varieties.
