Farm Outlook from Kossuth Extension Director on 1958 prospects
Iowa State College economist Francis Al Kutish reports feed grain production for 1958 likely to be lower than 1957, with a post-year surplus expected after feeding. More acres may boost corn and sorghum availability for feed in 1958-59, but hog producers fear overproduction as spring pig crops rise. Hog marketings are expected to grow through summer and early fall, risking a larger supply later in 1959.

Union Slough Digest Farming for Wildlife on Refuge Land
Union Slough National Wildlife Refuge manages about 200 acres of cropland to produce wildlife food and cover. Five cooperative farmers farm most fields, harvest all small grains and two hay cuttings, while the refuge retains standing corn and third cutting hay for wildlife. Harvest timing aims to minimize field occupation during waterfowl use, with optional ensilage and winter grain strips. Hay mowing is restricted to July 1–August 20 to support nesting and winter cover, and a flushing bar is required for July mowing. Fertility is maintained via fertilizers, a four year rotation and contour strips, with full switch to contour strip farming slated for completion in 1958.
