Farm Help Covered by Social Security, Swedlund Says
Clifford W. Swedlund of the Fort Dodge Social Security office warns farmers hiring laborers that farm workers may be covered under the Social Security Act. Under the 1956 amendments, farm employers must report cash wages of employees earning at least 150 dollars annually or those working 20 or more days. Employers owe 4% Social Security tax on each affected worker, with a 2% deduction from pay to cover the employee’s share.
