Bridge Across River Opened Near Dundee Scotland
A giant railway bridge nearly two miles long spanning the river near Newport provides a faster link for the North British Railway. Built with 83 spans, its central section crosses the navigable channel, with girders up to 213 feet long and a total height of 58 feet above high water. The project, started in 1870 with a capital of 720,000, uses brick and iron work, hydraulic raising, and careful expansion gaps to handle heat and load.
