Local page highlights Town Budget meeting at the high school with a stable budget despite more teachers and students. Various residents are reported fishing, remodeling at the Methodist church, and community events like PTA rummage sale and Band Booster meeting.
Mrs. Yvonne McGinty, secretary at Thomson Consolidated Grade School District 174 since September 1961, tendered her resignation to the school board. The resignation becomes effective after two weeks' notice following last Monday's meeting.
Enrollment of 33 children leads to two kindergarten classes. A morning class of 15 meets 9 30 to 11 30 and an afternoon class of 18 meets 1 15 to 3 15. Enrollment was held last Monday with regular classes starting Tuesday. Mrs Donald Sippel is the teacher.
Mrs Bernard Groharing and daughter Lori left last Friday to join their husband father in Turkey where he is stationed with the U S Air Force. They were taken to O Hare field in Chicago by his parents Mr and Mrs Bruce Groharing where they boarded a jet plane.

Thomson Music Boosters will buy new band instruments and twirler costumes. Officers elected include President Mrs Alfred Dykstra Vice President Mrs R C Bush Secretary Mrs Robert Knuth and Treasurer Mrs Frank Manning.
Mrs. G W Hamilton of Savanna announces the Goodwill Industries truck will visit Thomson Argo-Fay and Wacker the third week of September to pick up clothing shoes toys furniture appliances and small household items for a training program for handicapped men and women. If items are too large call Mrs Hamilton Savanna 4202 for pickup at the Church of the Brethren on Wacker.
Carolyn birthday party held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fay Ashby and family honoring their daughter with nine guests including Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Ashby Sr Mrs. Hattie Greeley and Ardella Houzenga. Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Fred Eisert of Tarpon Springs Florida and others at local households.
Mrs Vernon Wiersema of Morrison and former Jeanette Carroll of Thomson were among 13 graduates from Katherine Shaw Bethea School of Nursing at Dixon Public Hospital. The commencement was held yesterday evening in the Dixon Methodist church. Mrs Wiersema is the daughter of Mrs Glen Williams of Thomson and a York Community High School graduate.
The Churches NST lists events across denominations including Baptist Methodist Catholic services in Fulton Argo Fay Thomson and Savanna. Activities cover youth groups Sunday worship guest ministers WSCS meetings and a Rock River Association Baptist gathering in DeKalb with Sept dates and festival plans at Rosecrans Home for Boys.
The bulletin lists several patients in nearby hospitals including Edna Shoemaker admitted Sunday at Savanna hospital and Earl Shoemaker admitted last Sunday as medical patients. Also noted are Dr. E. H. Gholson who had an emergency appendectomy in Madison, and others: Donald Atherton with flu, William Geerts in Iowa City transfer, Delores Leavens returning from Chicago surgery, Laura Jurgensen dismissed from Savanna after two weeks, Adam Heinze improving at St. Francis Freeport, and Carl Jensen in Mercy Clinton with sister Russel Green of Thom son.
The Thomson Woman's Club began its 24th year with 26 members and guests at the grade school cafeteria. President Merle Bielema announced upcoming events including a Day of Christmas program in Dixon, a talk in Sterling, and the Mary Circle luncheon.
Carolyn Ann Whitney of Thomson married Stephen Lee Cook of Clinton in Immanuel Lutheran Church Clinton. The ceremony featured Rev Theodore Anderson and music by Mrs Nicholas Petersen and Mrs Allen Beyer. The bride wore chantilly lace gown with sabrina neckline and chapel train. Reception followed at the Shearton Lafayette Hotel and they will reside at 227 1/2 E Washington Apt 6 Iowa City after Sept 17.
Miss Jean Cohenour of Sterling wed David Doerring of Prophets Town at First Congregational church in Sterling. Diana Durward served as bridesmaid. Dale Cohenour and family are her parents.
The Thomson Melon Tossers hosted an all day double elimination event with five teams including Prophetstown Always Strong Pine Grove Super Valu Rock Falls Phillips 66 Oilers Mt Carroll Hawks. Final results show Rock Falls defeating Phillips 66 13 to 5 in the championship.
Announcement of the marriage of Winifred Kradle of Oregon Oregon and Edward Wolff of Chicago. The ceremony occurred at 11 AM on August 25 in the Lutheran church in Oregon. The couple will reside in Oregon.
The Thomson Parent-Teachers Association opens its year with a meeting in the school cafeteria on Friday September 14 at 7 30 PM. Dr Franklin R Fitch associate medical director of clinics Northwestern University Medical School Evanston Illinois will discuss Sex Education That Makes Sense and present Human Growth followed by a Q A. Dr Fitch has long worked in social hygiene education and served in World War II. He is executive director of the Illinois Social Hygiene League and Social Hygiene Chairman of the Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers. A supervised nursery will be provided and refreshments served by the hospitality committee including Mrs Harry Dittmar Mrs Robert Knuth Mrs Jack Flickinger Mrs Robert Falls Mrs Sylvester Mer cer Mrs Richard Falls and Mrs Robert Fosdick.
The Ruth Circle of Thomson Methodist WSCS sponsors a homemade bake sale this Saturday September 15 starting at 10 A M at Starr's Cafe. They invite patrons to support the event.
After school on Tuesday Mrs. Gilpin Stagg hosted a get together honoring her son Brian turning eight. Guests included Mark Flickinger Bobby Wilt Deana Wilt Donnie Robinson Bradley Cate Teresa Meakins Luanne Rosch and David Stagg. Games were played and birthday cake ice cream were served, with many gifts presented to Brian.
The week’s meals include Roast Pork with mashed potatoes and beet bake on Monday. Goulash with peanut butter sandwiches on Tuesday. Sloppy Joe with peas on Wednesday. Turkey and Noodles with cabbage salad on Thursday. and Fish Sticks with potatoes, peas, carrots, and fruit on Friday. Milk accompanies all meals.
The Rev and Mrs Vernon Hoffs hosted a hamburger fry at the parsonage for post high school and college guests in Spring Valley. Attendees included Karen Eissens Charlotte Houzenga Patricia Houzenga Judy Koenes Linda Bielema Connie Green Bob Wiersema Laverne Pessman Jim Pessman Bob Diesema Bonnie Bielema and Kenneth Buikema. Mrs Hoffs played piano solos during the closing quiet time.
The infant son born to Mr. and Mrs. Terry Elliott of Thomson has been named Christopher Eric. Mrs. Elsie Tousley and Mr. Cecil Tousley with relatives C E Pousley of Rock Falls returned from Hayward Wisconsin after a cottage stay. The Gablin family, Orville and LeRoy, concluded a Canada and Western States vacation visiting Seattle and Jasper National Park and Salt Lake City. Gus Roggendorf and family visited Morrison with A E Mitchell. Shell Lake visitors called on Frank Potter.
The P T A and Thomson Woman's Club sponsor SOS Day on Sunday September 30 at the school cafeteria from 11 AM to 7 PM. Sabin Oral vaccine given on a lump of sugar for ages 3 months to 103 years with second and third doses on November 4 and December 16. A 25 cent donation is requested to cover vaccine costs and supplies with a doctor assigned to each of the three Sundays in Carroll county.
The Thomson Consolidated school board assigns Ms. Maxine DeVoe of Clinton to first grade. Because enrollment is high the class will be split into two sections with Mrs. Dorothy Floyd teaching the other first grade group.
The York Cedar 4-H club held its September 19 meeting in the Thomson ag room. Officers elected include President Terry Haas Vice President Walter Holland Secretary Patty Kauffman Treasurer Jim Hartman Reporter Duane St Ores Sergeant at arms Larry Hook Recreation chairman Evelyn Prins Federation delegates Larry Carroll and Harlan Hoff Alternates Walter Holland and Burton Prins. A committee was formed to meet Driftwood 4H for a potluck before achievement night September 28 with junior leaders named.
John Stearns of Saxonville Massachusetts has accepted employment with Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids and plans to relocate with his family soon. They are living with her parents in Clinton while four boys stay with their aunt in Thomson as they search for housing.
Jon Whitney son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Whitney Chadwick started classes Monday at Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls as a freshman. His parents drove him to Cedar Falls on Sunday.
The Thomson Melon Tossers secured the NI Fastball League regular season title with a 20 3 record. In the playoff they defeated Hanover 7 to 1 on September 7 and Stockton Super Valu 5 to 0 on September 12 to take the series.
Mrs. Viola Hendricks of Auburndale Florida formerly of Fulton died Saturday night in a Winter Haven hospital. Funeral services were planned for Tuesday at ten, burial in Auburndale. She was born in Rock Falls Illinois and survived by her husband Dr. C. P. Hendricks a son Richard of Orlando a daughter Lt Col Lelia Hendricks of Ft Jackson and a sister Mrs Frank Haskell of Garden Grove California.
A belated birthday gathering for Mrs. Mary Nugent and Thomas J. Hand was held Saturday night at the Hand home in Fulton. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bellich and family, Thomas M. Hand, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Weatherwax and Mary Nugent of Rockford. Earlier, Mrs. Jean Frank of Lanark and Mr. and Mrs. John Harris of Champaign visited Roy Houghton’s home, with weekend guests including Mr. and Mrs. Ray Klein of Downers Grove.
Mr and Mrs Robert Pannell welcomed a daughter Lisa Marie born Sunday evening Sept 9 at Mercy hospital Clinton. She weighed 7 lbs ? oz. Mrs Roger Simon and family announce a 7 lb daughter born Saturday Sept 8 at Jane Lamb hospital Morrison area. The mother is Janice Geerts daughter of Mr and Mrs Wm Geerts of Morrison.
