The first Grim family reunion honored Sam Grim on his 67th birthday at his Chadwick home with thirty-nine relatives. They planned to hold future reunions the first Sunday in September 1923 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Bast in Chadwick.
The York PTA holds its first meeting at C H S gym on Thursday evening September 1. Attendance is encouraged as the program includes a business session committee reports welcome to teachers student staff responses musical numbers and a social committee plan led by president Rush W. Carroll.
The York Commercial Club will hold its September meeting in the Assembly room of the Y C H S on Tuesday at 7 30 p m The program includes a business meeting Melon Day report constitution and by laws reading a round table on club financing led by W A Adams discussion on extending membership led by H A Gale greetings by Prof Demarec and Hemmer community singing led by G A Smith and an invitation to all local business people farmers and women Several Melon Day checks remain uncashed and K K Carpenter asks holders to present them for payment to finalize the Melon Day report. Local social notices follow including visits and picnics with Morrison Milledgeville Minneapolis Chadwick Fulton and others.
Church announces arrival of E Richardson minister of Gerlaw to preach in Gerlaw Sept 11 morning and Thomson evening. A revival series runs Sept 11–23 with topics The Law of Increase The Holy Spirit and more. Family night and Junior C E led by Zereta Potter. Services 7 30 pm daily with plans for Bible school time change and officer installation Sept 18.
Catholic regular services are listed for next Sunday at & o'clock. A ladies society met at the church basement, and a Sunday school social occurred Tuesday evening at the Henry and Lewis Strand home with about thirty five attendees. The Live Wire class at the Methodist church featured several numbers including Walking in the King's Highway and Be Thy Work Lovingly. Sunday school is set for next Sunday at 10 o'clock.
A reunion of Bell family members gathered Sunday with attendees from Clinton Morrison and Savanna. Officers for next year were elected with Mrs. Donald Smith as president and Mr. Ed Bell as vice president. Also noted Ida Weber is confined to her bed with rheumatism.
The Village Tall met Tuesday at 2 p.m. with Justice of Jepjce rd Lewis absent due to illness. Road Commissioner John Ashpole attended. They set the rate for the Highway Commissioner at 226 per block of fixed valuation, levying 9000 for the purpose. Delinquent taxes will reduce total collection to about 5600 or 5700. Audit of supervisor books noted. bills paid will appear in the annual report. A. Brack and Jimmie Smith, recently visiting at the Edson Holland home, joined Mrs. Edward Smith and son Ed as they returned to Chicago Monday evening.
Mr and Mrs Ed McGinty and Mr and Mrs John Carroll with daughter Lois toured the area on a Sunday trip along the new Route 180 visiting Prophetstown Morrison and Annawan where they called on Frank J Gurley at a mill or village site.
The Thom son Village Board met Tuesday chaired by President Bayard Lewis. Bills from multiple departments including library tax fund, street labor, utilities, and hardware were reviewed and approved for payment totaling 663.23. Water rates not yet reported. Purchasing committee to inspect hose stock and determine needs for street repairs.
Twelve members of the Ladies Aid Society met with Mrs Sarah Grebarine on Wednesday afternoon. They will meet again next Wednesday at the same place. The group hosts a pastry sale Saturday morning at the Utilities office. Services are scheduled for next Sunday with preaching at 9:30 p.m. and Sunday school at 10:30 a.m.
Melons have been shipped heavier this year with 11 cars from Thomson and the spars north of town and 7 cars from Savanna. Prices likely averaged around 31 per car. Melons are already scarce and a warm spell could reduce supplies further.
Magistrate D Stumphy reported to City Clerk Gladys Dundeen that in August the city collected 342 dollars from six fines. There were 12 arrests that month. six offenders were required to pay, the rest remitted. The largest fine was 200 dollars for disorderly conduct. One hundred dollars for drunken driving followed by two five dollar fines for disorderly conduct and three dollars for intoxication.
The Thomson Hitch Hikers return from a coast trip with two remaining picture shows on the summer schedule. They describe travel from Center to the Rosial Game, through Yakima and Spokane, noting cheap fruits in the West, low harvests, and farmers protesting. They visited Theodore Roosevelt’s ranch and Lindbergh’s childhood home, and express hope to repeat the journey next summer.
The Consolidated school opened Monday with enrollments listed by grade. Representatives from all Carroll county towns will gather at Mt. Carroll Monday evening Sept. 12 to discuss the possibilities and to determine the policies that such a county organization should pursue. The meeting aims to form a county club along community and commercial lines working with seven local commercial clubs. The session begins at 6 30 with a feed, followed by problem discussion. delegates named include R G Fuller and C Martha from Savanna, Al Kessler and Harold Eaton from Carroll, and others from Lanark Milledgeville and Shannon yet to be announced.
Samuel J Hawk, 73, long familiar Fulton area farmer and brother of Will Hawk of Thomson, died Wednesday at Morrison, after visiting his son George W Hawk. Funeral set Saturday at George Hall home at 2 PM with service at 2 30 PM at Methodist Episcopal Church Morrison. Burial in Fulton. Born May 1 1858 in Wilkes Barre PA, he came to Carroll County in 1868 with parents, married Miss Mary Jane Pape in 1845, had five children. Survived by two daughters Laura Seger Clinton Edna Dean Morrison, sons George W Hawk Wheeler? and Willard Hawk Morrison Clinton, sister and fourteen grandchildren, two brothers William Thomson and Eli Clinton, sister Mrs George Wdnour Fulton. Member Modern Woodmen of America.
Frank A Graves of 1600 Twelfth Ave Rock Island retires Sept 1 after a 61 year career with Modern Woodmen including 39 years in the Suspension department. He began in 1893 with prior railway service and helped shape the head office staff. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1927.
Mr and Mrs Higher Wriltans were given a surprise party at the Trem home, with friends presenting gifts, prizes, and cake. Twenty guests attended, and the event featured games and light refreshments amid a festive atmosphere.
