Irving Bauman of Woodford county Illinois wins the national corn husking title with 46.71 bushels near Davenport. Beus Vaughan of Pratt county set Illinois state record at 45.436 bushels. Vaughan finishes fifth. Elmer Carlson’s prior national record 41.5 bushels is surpassed by the top four huskers.
Ernest Myers of Savanna sues Bernard F. Schunder of Savanna in Carroll county circuit court seeking 3037.10. The claim includes 269.10 for medical bills 768 for lost wages and 2000 for loss of an eye. Myers alleges he was rabbit hunting north of Savanna on November 26 1989 when pellets from Schunder's shotgun struck him.
John K Morris a Rock Creek farmer near Chadwick spoke from Chicago on national radio. A young progressive farmer with a large cattle herd and a sizable dairy operation he appeared alongside J J Fidler of Canton as Illinois committee speakers for the national agriculture group. Morris an Illinois College of Agriculture graduate was active in 4 H in Carroll county years ago and is the son of veteran farmer George Morris.
Savanna high's gridiron squad battled DeWitt high to a 14 14 tie on the Iowa squad's field Friday night. Savanna scored first in the opening period, DeWitt tied it in the second, Savanna led third quarter then DeWitt rallied in the final period to even the score. Welch and Johnson scored Savanna's touchdowns and the extra points. M Strang scored both DeWitt TDs with Schmidt kicking the extra points.
Cash benefits totaling 14566 were paid to unemployed workers in Carroll County from the Illinois Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund for fourteen months ending September 30. State Director of Labor Martin P. Durkin announced the statewide total benefits paid to Illinois workers during the period amounted to 52759066.
In the Nov 5 election, Republicans name about twenty two candidates on statewide county and national tickets, while Democrats list nineteen. The independent and third parties appear, but offer few local contenders. Tuesday night a Mt. Carroll rally announced a county wide tour ending with a Friday evening program at the Orpheum theatre in Savanna. Caravans will depart Shannon and Milledgeville, join in Lanark, and march to East Savanna for a 7 pm gathering with Thomson. Judge Franklin J. Stransky to speak. another Lanark rally planned Saturday. Clarence Gums sentenced to six months at Vandalia penal farm for parole violation.
A girl and two men from Clinton Iowa suffered minor head injuries at about 7 15 p m Friday when their car collided with a machine driven by Dr W L Derrer of Mt Carroll on highway 64 just east of Mt Carroll city limits The Clinton occupants were Eleanor Mc Nulty Harold Jager and Wesley Newbanks the driver Injuries were treated by a Mt Carroll physician Newbanks car was badly damaged and the left side of the Derrer car was slightly damaged Dr Derrer was not injured
Top market Carroll county swine led the Monday session at the Chicago Stock Yards. A drove of quality butcher stock from Robert Williamson of Mt. Carroll averaged 227 pounds and sold without sorting at $6.50 per ewt.
NYA announces Palisades State Park center near Savanna on Route 0 will be ready around November 15. Five dormitories housing 50 youths each, plus administration, dining, kitchen, shower and pump facilities. Youths aged 18 to 24 from statewide areas to work under Col Crim with NYA oversight.
More than 300 people gathered for a town rally and chicken supper in Mt Carroll hosted Tuesday night by Carroll County Young Republican group. Principal speakers were Attorney Donald Eaton of Jo Daviess County and Congressman Leo E. Allen of Galena. Guests included Republican candidates John Gelwicks J L Brearton Edward Laughlin and attendees from across the county.

Appointments were made to the council nominating committee and the annual meeting is set for November 24 in Freeport with a banquet. The 1941 Council Jamboree will be at the Savanna high school stadium in early June 1941.

Stevenson and will oversee Carroll, Jo Daviess, Ogle, DeKalb, Boone, Winnebago, and other adjacent counties. New boundaries take effect Nov. 1 after a state university extension service recommendation.
Bids for construction of a new cantonment camp at Savanna Ordnance depot will be asked Friday, November 1. Contractors must finish within 90 days of award and the contract covers utilities, electric lines, water service and sewage system.
Carroll County records show absentee ballot applications nearing record levels with 150 names by Tuesday. County Clerk Walter Watson notes applications by mail accepted until Thursday night and in person until Saturday, echoing the 208 mail requests logged four years ago and surpassing pre 1936 highs of 97.
Between 60 and 100 members of the Audubon Society of Chicago will visit Savanna and vicinity on Sunday November 3. They will tour Mississippi Palisades park and nearby river bluffs to study bird life, have a park luncheon, an evening meal at the Community church parlor, and view bird life pictures in the church auditorium. Arrangements were made through E. T. Baroody of Chicago, a former Savanna resident.
