Babson Park Massachusetts reports that retail sales in 1954 lag 2 percent from a year earlier despite a September pickup due to cool weather and heavy store advertising. High savings and wages buoy spending, but parking meters hurt business. free or extended parking could keep shoppers in districts longer.
James Marks of Wisconsin won the Tracy Farms event near Janesville with a 94.64 score using a Woods Bros. Picker. Warren Friessen of South Dakota placed second with 92.112 using a New Idea No. 7 picker, and six other top ten finishers used the same model. New Idea pickers dominated husking and shelled corn scoring categories. In Florida, R E Boyd of Mt. Carroll asks Chadwick Review be mailed to 706 Hollywood Parkway, Hollywood FL. Local social notes report visits by Mr and Mrs Robert Lehman and daughter of Naperville and by Mr and Mrs Robert Christiansen of Mr Morris and Mr and Mrs Kenneth Burch of Rockford.
Lee Gifford of Mt. Carroll announces seven Carroll county residents appointed as enumerators for the 1954 census of agriculture. They will canvass farms starting Nov. 3 for three to four weeks, with training completed by Oct. 26. Enumerators must interview operators, record farm operations, facilities and equipment, and handle six hours daily plus possible evening work.
Margaret Ruth Frawley and Alfred G. Keil of Savanna wed at St John’s Catholic Church with Attendants Colleen Frawley and Alfred Keil. The couple to reside in Savanna. both work at Savanna ordnance depot. Donna Kempel and Gordon Krell united in Kent in double ring candlelight ceremony at St Paul’s Lutheran. Jeanette Over and Lawrence W. Calkins Jr. wed in Sterling at First Congregational Church with reception, followed by honeymoon trip west.
Chicago Earl M Hughes of Woodstock, a farmer and Illinois Agricultural Association director, is named consultant to the Commodity Stabilization Service administrator by Secretary Ezra Benson. He grew up in McHenry County, studied at Illinois and Cornell, and taught agricultural economics before returning to farming.
Residents of Carroll County bought 128 897 in Series E and H United States Savings Bonds in August 1954. Figures were provided to F. E. Weidman Mt. Carroll volunteer chairman of the county Savings Bonds program by the Treasury Department.
Mt Carroll high school auditorium hosts first union service for Reformation Sunday October 31 at 7 30 p m. Eight pastors assist. Dr Gaylord M Couchman of Dubuque University to preach. Dr F J Mullin of Shimer College to offer invocation. Rev Cyrus Pollard reads scripture. Community invited.
County Clerk W. M. Nipe issued licenses to wed Alfred G. Keil and Margaret G. Frawley of Savanna. In circuit court, two youths convicted of gun theft faced sentencing. one given probation, the other to state prison. Other cases include Lilly placed on probation, Greer sentenced to prison with past escape attempts. Divorce granted to Clarence E. Armstrong. Real estate transfers listed for several parties. A youth, Harold Zink, received seven days in jail for driving with suspended license after an accident near Mt. Carroll.
Chadwick notes visitors including Mr and Mrs Arthur Lott Mrs Henry Diffenbough and children Jill Jimmy in Lanark. Willard Lott and son from Lanark visited the Lott home. Dinner guests at Fred Schreiner home included Wilbur Schreiner and daughters Dixon Howard Stover Norma Arman Milledgeville Merlyn Schreiner Darla and Angela.
The 14th annual meeting of the Jo Carroll Rural Electric Cooperative will be at Elizabeth High School gymnasium on Saturday December 4. Three directors will be elected for three year terms. Nominations include Everett Read Henry Dittsmar and Mrs Bern ie Moore. A government loan of 261000 for construction and conversion work was approved for submission to Washington DC with about 40000 to extend 44 miles of single phase line and upgrade lines for heavier loads.
Claude Stauffer of Lanark has been appointed Carroll County representative for Rusco Combination Windows and Doors. The Hauger Supply Co. of Sterling Illinois authorized the franchise. Stauffer, known in Lanark, previously owned a Massey Harris dealership and will devote full time to selling and servicing Rusco products in Carroll County.
Harvey S. Olson, a former Illinois high school basketball star and Purdue football captain of 1928, writes Aboard and Abroad a 730 page professional guide to Europe. Reviews praise Olson for his cross Atlantic experience and endorse the book as the best one volume Europe guide now in the United States.
Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Remmers were Sunday dinner guests at Mr. and Mrs. Donald Rauser in Morrison for Kathy Lynn Remmers sixth birthday. Also visiting were Mr. and Mrs. Warren Bowles and Judy and Raymond of East Moline, joining Albert Bowles, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Cook of McAllen Texas, and Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Bowles of Moline.
At the October Chadwick American Legion Post 739 meeting Commander Frank Mest formed a committee to raise funds for the Gifts to Yanks Who Gave campaign, aiding Christmas gifts for hospitalized veterans. A work night on Oct 25 aimed to finish painting and insulation upgrades continues, with a new heating door planned. A Veterans Day dinner with the Auxiliary is set for Nov 11.

A Fulton13 year old, John Thompson, died Friday afternoon after being struck in the stomach by a shotgun blast when a companion dropped the weapon. Scott Abbott, also 13, testified the gun slipped from his hands and fired as it hit the ground near the Burlington right of way north of Fulton. The coroner's jury ruled accidental death. Funeral services were held Monday at Trinity Reformed Church with burial in Fulton Cemetery. he is survived by his parents and a brother.

Interior of Pearl Daehler and son Albert Daehler home in Argo-Fa heavily damaged by fire discovered before 4 a m. Firefighters from Thomson and Chadwick extinguished most of the blaze though the origin was undetermined. Albert escaped through a window as smoke blocked his door. Most clothing and furniture ruined by flames, water, and smoke. roof and frame suffered damage.
Gov Stratton proclaims November 7 to 13 as American Legion Week in Wilness. The seven day period urges public awareness of Legion programs and duties of citizens. Church services Sunday November 7 honor the Nations freedoms and faiths. Veterans Day November 11 is observed with a national shift from Armistice Day.

Cloudy conditions Monday brought showers that night and Tuesday halting corn harvesting briefly. Tuesday proved very unpleasant for highway travel with low hanging clouds reducing visibility to near zero. Wednesday morning showed clearing skies and signs of fair weather for several days.

Charlie Larkey aged 76 of Malvern died at 4 00 p m Sunday after illness of over a year His funeral was at 2 00 p m Wednesday at Tomlinson funeral home Morrison Rev Clarence E Stanley officiated and burial was in Grove Hill cemetery Born February 2 1878 in Coleta he was the son of John and Pauline Larkey He married Lola Riglin on April 29 1909 Surviving are his widow two sons Floyd of Moline and Marvin of Morrison two grandsons four sisters Mary Hanaford Covina California Emma Horning Morrison Berths Finkle Coleta and Lizzie Straub Chadwick
Martha Ann Clark Elder, 101, died at 10 a m October 21 at the Henry A Cook home south of Savanna after a three year illness. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p m at the Bagley Wisconsin Methodist church with a prayer service in Savanna. Burial was in Flint cemetery at Bagley. Born March 28 1853 in Hazelton Wisconsin she married George W Clark in 1871. Surviving are six sons one daughter one sister one brother 45 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held for 81 year old Adam Erbsen at Frank funeral home and Ebenezer Evangelical Reformed church near Pearl City with Clifford Jansen officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Survivors include several relatives in Lanark Forreston and Pearl City. Mr Erbsen born January 11 1873 in Stephenson County died after a four month illness. He moved to Lanark with his wife about ten years ago. His wife Caroline Brinkmier Erbsen died in March 1953.
New tolls took effect at midnight October 22 with passenger cars set at 20 cents and trucks ranging from 20 cents to 1.50 for higher axle counts. Pedestrians and cyclists pay five and ten cents respectively, with the plan to retire bridge debt in about 20 years and toll-free operation thereafter. The Julien Dubuque bridge across the Mississippi will become toll-free on December 27, 1954.
David Austin Bailey 72 died Oct 19 at Mercy Hospital Clinton after a long illness. Funeral held Oct 21 at Sneider Funeral Home Clinton with burial Chadwick Cemetery. Bailey born July 6 1889 Whiteside County son of Willis and Alice Bailey. He married Minnie Kinney 1902 who died 1882. Survived by widow one daughter six grandchildren six brothers and one sister.
Sunday dinner guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. Bickert were Mr. and Mrs. John Volz of Blue Earth, Minn., and Johanna Volz. Afternoon callers were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Werner of Mill edgeville.
