Local frost claims crops in early October freeze

First heavy frost of the season hit Saturday night with temperatures around 20 degrees and a second frost Sunday night dipping to 24. The cold snap finished crops and flowers and Sunday’s reading was among the coldest October nights in over five decades. Savanna retir ed lawyer Savanna William G. Kent, 78, died at 4 30 a m Saturday in Belvidere where he had lived with his son in law and daughter for two years. Funeral services were held at Trinity Episcopal church in Belvidere. He was born June 3, 1870 in London and educated at Oxford. Survived by brothers in England, South Africa and China.

Burglar Lounsbury Sentenced to Life in Joliet Penitentiary

Morrison Emory Lounsbury was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Ray Kinnehiel to life in Joliet for habitual criminal acts and two concurrent burglary terms of 20 to 25 years. He appeared without a lawyer, pleaded guilty to burglary and habitual criminal act, and was linked to stolen property recovered July 1 in Sterling. Sheriff Boyd Kimmel testified, and Carroll County accomplice indictment was noted.

Lanark man Lanark-Frank Myers 64 a stone mason was killed about 430 pm Monday after falling from a roof he helped build for Leonard Fry on West Locus street. He died before aid arrived.
