Haystack Fire Destroys 7 Tons on Dan Johns Farm

A stack of about seven tons of hay burned at 9 15 a m last Thursday on the Dan Johns farm northeast of Savanna. Loss put at 90 dollars as several baled tons were saved. Savanna rural firefighters and volunteers responded, stopping the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings.

Ordnance Depot Chief Speaker At DAR Session

Pony rider injured after collision near Mt Carroll

David Saidel, 10, son of Isadore and Mrs Saidel, suffered a deep calf gash when his pony struck a passing car driven by 20 year old Veryle Ginther at Routes 78 and 64 in Mt Carroll. Deputy George Hicks investigated the incident and David was taken to Freeport hospital for treatment.

Uninjured As Car Plunges From Savanna Bridge

Charles Hopkins of Savanna, 20, escaped injury when his coupe ran off the road at 3 a m and plunged over an 18 foot embankment into a slough near the Savanna Sambula bridge. The car broke seven guard posts before entering the water. Hopkins crawled out and walked to the toll house for help to recover the vehicle.

Glen Eadward McGoo, 20, gunner's mate third class on a supply ship, is missing in action. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred McGoo, formerly of Pittsburg Alabama, later Hanover and Savanna. He enlisted June 2, 1942, after high school graduation May 20, 1942. Father serves as civilian guard at Savanna ordnance depot.

Milledgeville Youth Hurt In Auto Accident

Harold Reiff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Reiff of the Milledgeville area, suffered a brain concussion and multiple facial injuries when the car he drove struck a culvert between Milledgeville and his home on Sunday night. He dozed at the wheel and the vehicle left the road, with neighbor Fred Fields finding him dazed on the highway.

Navy Recruiter Visit set for Savanna October 28 1945

A Rock Island Navy recruiter will be at the Savanna post office on October 28 1945 at 1 pm to interview men for the U S Navy or Naval Reserve and women for the Navy Womens Reserve WAVES. Eligibility includes WAVES age 20 with two years of high school, 17 year olds may enlist, and men 28 to 50 with special skills may join the Oval Reserve. Applicants should bring birth or baptismal certificates and parental consent notes.

A U S army truck driven by Pvt Albert Plouake collided with a sedan on Mass street in Savanna shortly after noon Saturday. In the crash, Mrs Carrie Jensen Charlen Douglas both of Savanna and Mrs Olive May and daughter of Clinton were shaken up with Mrs May suffering cuts about the mouth. The sedan was damaged but the truck remained largely unharmed.

Car Damaged in Savanna Vehicle Incident

Rudy McCue reported to Savanna police that his car parked west of the tracks at Main street and Chicago avenue suffered broken windows lights and mirrors and had the battery removed when he returned from fishing. Police noted this is the third such incident in the vicinity.

At Cheyenne Wyoming the Wyoming Hereford Ranch sold 60 registered bulls and females for 197625 dollars averaging 3204 dollars. Bulls averaged 4125 dollars totaling 119625 and females 2616 dollars totaling 78000 with top bull at 20000 and top female at 13000. Buyers came from 15 states.

Lanark Youth Die After Duck Hunting Accident

Chester Brantner twenty year old of Lanark was fatally injured Friday morning when a shotgun discharged during a duck hunt at Sand Slough north of Thomson. He died Monday in Savanna hospital after blood loss and injuries to his left thigh. Survivors include his parents and eight brothers and sisters. Funeral set for Thursday at Lanark Church of the Brethren with burial in Lanark cemetery.
