Good weekend conditions boosted recreational boating with 60 boats and 183 passengers passing Lock No. 14 at LeClaire and 29 boats with 56 passengers through Lock 15. Lock 13 near Fulton also reported high lockages. Two river incidents occurred: a limestone barge sank between Davenport and Muscatine on Oct 11 and towboats Bull Durham and E. B. Two men to penal farm for six months each
In Vandalia before Judge Edward J. Bureoeas two men received six month sentences to serve at the state penal farm. Dale Ethridge 40 and Mr Carroll pleaded guilty to operating a vehicle while under the influence and improper license plate usage. A third man, Robert Noble 40 of Savanna also drew six months for operating while intoxicated.

College Housing Loan Granted to Shimer College
A $480000 housing loan was awarded to Shimer College in Mt. Carroll to fund a women’s dormitory for 122 residents. Construction began last September, and the private coed college with 260 plus students is now a four year institution since 1959. Luther Cowin Burns Fingers In Local Farm Mechanism
Luther Cowin, an employee on the Lloyd Henderson farm near Chadwick, suffered severe injuries to his right hand when his hand was caught in a corn picker on Saturday. He lost several fingers and sustained facial injuries. He received treatment at a local physician's office.

Cherera Ballard of Thomson grade school won the county Farm Bureau poster contest sponsored by the Carroll County Women’s Committee.
