Four Chicago men fined for trespassing on Thompson farm

Four Chicago men named Everly Dixon Thomas E Conran Birt Hisks and Edmond Crockett were fined five dollars and costs each for trespassing while hunting squirrels on the N C French farm east of Thomson. Deputy Sheriff Carlos Johnston arrested them after a report of trespassers on Rush Carroll’s bluff timberland.

Finifrock Herd Sets High Mark in Carroll DHIA

In Carroll County the Finifrock herd of seven Holsteins led the September DHIA with 39.4 pounds butterfat and 1,111 pounds milk. Carroll and French (24 Holsteins) placed second at 38.9 fat and 938 milk. Nordhoff and Peck (24 Holsteins) were third with 80.5 fat and 751 milk. John K. Morris (20 Guernseys) fourth with 26.8 fat and 523 milk. J. P. Stroup (25 Guernseys) fifth with 26.4 fat and 473 milk.

Negro Quartet to Perform at Frances Shimer College

Hampton Institute's famed negro quartet, nationally known, will give a concert at Metcalf hall Frances Shimer college Mt Carroll on Friday evening October 19 at 8 o'clock. Admission charged. They will sing religious and secular numbers and are renowned interpreters of negro spirituals.

No Auto Deaths In County In September Reported

Carroll County had no automobile fatalities in September according to traffic records. The six northern counties combined saw eight deaths, with Whiteside at three, Lee at two, and Jo Daviess and Ogle at one each. Stephenson also reported none in this district. For the first nine months the toll: Carroll 2, Jo Daviess 3, Ogle 6, Stephenson 6, Whiteside 11, Lee 15.

Sunday School Convention To Be Held Oct 14

Plans are complete for the first Sunday school convention of the Reformed and Christian Reformed churches of northwestern Illinois to be held Tuesday October 14 in Fulton. The all day event will include talks music a group dinner and a public evening gathering with Prof. Schultze president of Calvin College as speaker. Too Much Rain Cited As Complaint This Week

Farmers complain of excessive soil moisture despite a weather forecaster's poor early week forecast. September rainfall reached 8.63 inches per Mt. Carroll observer James Mc Cray as heavy rain hit Saturday afternoon and evening. The forecast promised more rain Sunday but the day stayed clear, then Monday began dry only to turn to a drizzle before ten AM.

Carroll County Corn Allotment for 1942 Unchanged

Carroll County will keep its 1942 corn allotment at 51 489 acres as in 1941 per J W Erdmeier chair of the county Agri cultural Conservation association. Normal yields rise to 50 8 bushels per acre from 48 2. parity payments depend on a yet undetermined rate times the 10-year average yield and allotted acres. Farmers must devote 20 percent of cropland to soil conserving crops to meet the 1942 program.

Banks to stay open Columbus Day in Carroll County

The Farmers' State Bank of Chadwick, the Thomson State Bank, and other Carroll county banks will be open for business on Columbus Day Monday Oct. 13. After discussions, officials decided not to close, confirming they would operate as usual that day.

Miss Ruby Elizabeth Knapp aged 23 daughter of Mr and Mrs Homer Knapp of Savanna has completed training at the United Air Lines school in Chicago and now serves the eastern division on the coast to coast route She is five feet four inches tall weighs 108 pounds and enjoys reading dancing and sports Her duties include caring for children serving meals aloft and answering questions to enhance passenger comfort and enjoyment.

Carroll Soil District Vote To Be Saturday

Carroll county soil conservation district will hold an election Saturday in the Farm Bureau office at Mt. Carroll to select five directors. The polls will open at 12:50 p m and close at 5 p m. Eligible to vote are all persons firms or corporations holding title to lands within the boundaries of the district.

Runaway trio nabbed near Carroll by deputy sheriff

Three Chicago schoolboys aged 15 and one 4 are held for investigation after attempting to steal a car at Mt. Carroll. Deputy Carlos Johnston seized two hunting knives and a .22 revolver from the youths who claimed they had run away from Chicago and hitchhiked to the area. They named Eddie Goldfisher, Edmund Knipp, and Raymond Stahnke as their home, all residents of Chicago.

Rock Island Pastor Escapes Injury In Rainy Ditch Crash

A Rock Island pastor driving Monday lost control on a slick highway north of town. His light coupe spun into a ditch after he swerved to avoid Clifton Spencer's truck. Passersby freed the bumper, a tow pulled the car back onto the road, and the driver was unharmed. Julius Bickert, truck driver, said he checked for approaching cars before turning.

Milledgeville Men Escape Injury After Route 88 Crash

Preston Kreider and Rex Munz of Milledgeville were unharmed Sunday morning when their car lost control south of town on route 88. Kreider, driving, pulled Munz away as the vehicle veered into a guard rail. The left door was crushed, the seat bent, and a running board brace embedded five inches in a guard rail post. Passersby stopped to help.

Elmer Fink of Chadwick led the Monday sale at the Chicago Stock Yards with 66 hogs selling for 11.45 per cwt. They weighed about 283 pounds each. Henry Young and Mrs. Myrtle Bull were Sunday guests of her father H. S. Moore at Clinton for a family dinner honoring Miss Elanor Crummitt of Brunswick Maryland.

John A. Eby 80 Shannon Dray Operator Died

Funeral services for John A. Eby 80 of Shannon were held midweek from the home with Rev Paul A Church officiating. Burial was at Bethel Cemetery. Born Nov 4 1860 at Davis he married Marie Louise Kloepping Jan 13 1890s. He lived in Shannon 47 years and ran a dray 45 years. Surviving are son Harvey R. Eby and sister Mrs Sarah Ellen Stewart both of Shannon.
