In Gloucester Massachusetts Babson argues the sea will outpace land farming in wealth and nutrition. He cites sea plants rich in minerals, stresses the fishing and lobster fleets as vital year round, and envisions sea commerce as America’s new frontier and insurance against famine.
Sgt. Paul D. Hansen, son of William H. Hansen of Savanna, died Sept 16 on Honshu Island, Japan. Born July 31, 1926, he attended Savanna schools and served about 18 months in the army overseas for a year. Surviving are his father, ill in a Dubuque hospital, and three Savanna brothers Mads, William G., and Peter.
Richard Truninger 14 son of Mr and Mrs David Truninger of Savanna chipped a piece of bone from his right elbow Saturday while hunting northeast of Savanna. He fell catching his foot on a fence and was taken to Savanna hospital where his arm was placed in a cast and he was sent home. Sylvester McWorthy Jr was with him. Mrs Harry Slade and Mrs Mary Shelly visited with local families on Sunday.
Leonard C. Hummel 21 and Marilynn Essig 25 died Sunday when a rented Aeronca crashed near the John Coats farm south of Milledgeville. Hummel, piloting, had training and a pilot license. Essig, from Indianapolis, had acted in amateur plays locally. Funeral services for Hummel were held at East Jordan United Brethren Church. Essig’s body was shipped to Indianapolis for burial.
The 18th district Federated Women's clubs will meet in Polo on April 18 with Mrs. Frank M. Keck as district president announcing the program committee. Speakers include Mrs. T. S. Chapman of Jerseyville and state officials. projects cited cover youth conservation, Vaughan hospital bedside racks, scholarships, art, international relations, and veterans services.
Carroll county will dismiss all schools Thursday October 17 for the fall teachers institute at Mt. Carroll High School. Sessions include Lloyd Wendt and Milton Mayer with topics on education media and politics. Registration starts at 9 and lectures continue after lunch until 4:15 with music interludes.
Chadwick brief notes Mr. and Mrs. Wm Hawk hosted Sunday dinner with guests Mr. and Mrs. Paul Halfman Mrs Frances Halfman and son Henry of Savanna and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Deets and family. Another group visited Adolph Tripp at his Riverview cottage with Chas Adolph and Kenneth Tripp.

Provide name address date and place of birth nat uralization status length of residence in Hil nois Carroll county and precinct. If not moving or not changing precinct you may vote at your regular polling place on Oct 8 between 6 am and 9 pm after registration.
Carroll County Clerk W. M. Nipe reports rapid progress under the permanent registration act but warns many voters have not registered or not notified changes of address. Unregistered voters cannot vote in the Nov 5 general election. those moving within the county may update by Oct 7, with Oct 8 at their precinct polling place. Ex servicemen, name changes, and new voters must also register. Registration hours run through Oct 7 at the county clerk’s office and Oct 8 at the local precinct from 6 am to 9 am.
John W. Smith 38 of Lanark died September 6 in St. Francis Hospital Freeport after a lingering illness. Born April 2, 1888 in Jo Daviess County, he was mourned at Trinity Lutheran Church Lanark with burial in Lanark Cemetery. Survived by widow Lillian Rabb, three children and four grandchildren, all of Lanark.
Bert Sturtevant 69 died September 27 at St Francis hospital Freeport after a four day stay. Funeral services were held at Sharman Funeral Home Shannon with Rev John M Beck officiating and burial in Brethren Cemetery Shannon. He was born May 28 1877 near Lanark, married Edna Hoy June 12 1905, survived by his widow two daughters Mrs Faye Byers and Missorn Sturtevant both of Shannon a son Floyd at home and two brothers Orville and Robert both of Rock Island.
Miss Lena King of Washington township died at 5 40 a m Saturday September 28 in Savanna city hospital where she had been a patient since April 1 9. Funeral services were held at 2 p m Monday at Fuller funeral home Savanna with Rev Gerhard P Fischer officiating and burial in Mosquito Hill cemetery north of Savanna She was born August 15 1884 in Washington township daughter of Henry and Mary King Surviving are two brothers Fred and Charles who had shared her home
Funeral services for Fred Schneider 64 longtime Carroll county resident were held Sunday at Mt. Carroll Methodist Church with Rev. Frank Countryman officiating and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. He died Wednesday Sept 25 at his home south of Mt. Carroll after a period of illness. Born Sept 13 1881 near Mt. Carroll he was the son of Michael and Catherine Schneider. He married Olive Hoover on Sept 23 1902. Surviving are his widow a son Maynard of Mt. Carroll two daughters Mrs Orville Schreiner of Moline and Mrs Lawrence Shiley of Mt. Carroll three grandchildren a sister and three brothers.
Miss Lila Curley visited Sunday in the Robert Atherton home in Lanark for a social call.
Darlene Heckman 12 daughter of Mrs Albertine Heckman Lanark was moved to Deaconess hospital Freeport last Thursday after polio diagnosis. She is the 10th Lanark polio case this year with seven recovering and one 8 year old, Mary Ann Morris, in an iron lung six weeks paralyzed and slowly improving.
Three teenage girls who fled Chicago homes were picked up by Savanna police early Thursday. Families were informed and later the father and brother of one girl collected them to return home.

Evan Rahn Chadwick Clifford Blocher Franklin Grove and H J Donaldson Polo were re elected to three year terms as directors at the annual stockholders meeting in Polo last Thursday. About 200 persons attended as reports showed the association had its best year in history.

Two women Irene Craig and Jean Lane sought since July for defrauding Thomson dealer of 910 dollars were captured in Michigan and are in U S marshal custody in Chicago. They advertised in a Clinton Iowa paper to sell a car to Larry Sullivan and took the money then vanished. Authorities say they operated similar schemes in several midwest states and will face federal charges in Chicago.
Owen Talbott 75 of Savanna was jailed on a charge of contributing to the delinquency of his seven year old son. Sheriff Eber Shepherd placed him in the county jail under a $500 bond to appear at the November circuit court term. Talbott and his 24 year old bride Frances Scobey of Maquoketa were married earlier that day in Galena before his arrest on a warrant by county truant officer Viola Patton.
Thomson News Clark Rhymer and his mother visited Sunday evening at the James Green home. Billy and Bobby Coon of Savannah spent the weekend with their aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ellis.
