Staff Sergeant Donald T. Gordon On Alert Duty During Cuban Crisis

Staff Sergeant Donald T. Gordon of Chadwick, Illinois, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Gordon Sr., is among Air Force personnel on alert in support of the President during the Cuban crisis. Gordon, a personnel technician, is married to Betty Cruz of Mobile, Alabama, and has been in readiness with his unit since the alert order. He is providing services and support for combat unit personnel moved to the area as part of the Air Force buildup.

Engineers Seek Extra Funds for Pecatonica River Flood Control

Congressman John B. Anderson reports that the Pecatonica River flood control project at Freeport will require about 197000 dollars more for final planning. The need stems from complex design work and major problems to solve, with Anderson pledging cooperation to secure the funds. Thomson FFA Student 3rd in Corn Contest

Leroy Appell, Thomson High School, earned third with 185.6 bushels per acre using Pioneer 3350 in the FFA section covering Carroll Whiteside and Lee counties. State winner James Catton produced 222.3 bushels at Brimfield High School.

Morris Angus Wins Chicago Show Honors

A beef animal named Morris Dormadleer placed seventh in an Angus class of 36 senior cattle on the hoof at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. The animal is from the Angus news of John K Morris of Chadwick. A timber removal contract for 647000 board feet from the Savanna Army Depot was awarded to Wood Products Inc of Savanna and Helle Timber Co of Oregon.

Community Helps Bowles Farm After Hand Injury

Neighbors friends and relatives of Chadwick farmer Albert Bowles gathered at Bowles farm on Tuesday November 20 to finish picking nearly 100 acres of corn and perform related chores after his severe hand injury. Fifty two volunteers operated 12 corn pickers five elevators five spreaders two loaders and 23 tractors with fuel donated by Gulf Oil dealer Ed Manning. Lunch was provided by local women and served in Chadwick Legion Hall donated by the Legion. Bowles was released from the hospital on Thanksgiving Day and returned home.

Pearl City girls top Lanark 53 to 48 in non conference

Pearl City defeated the Lanark Beavers 53 48 in a non conference game at Lanark. Lanark led 33 28 at halftime but went cold in the third period scoring only three points as Pearl City pulled away. Lanark’s Ken Wall topped scoring with 24 points while Pearl City’s Buck and Randers added 15 and 14 respectively. Lanark won the freshman soph game 50 46.

Thanksgiving Guests Gather in Dixon and Surrounding Homes

Mrs Helen Hussey 82 mother of Dr L B Hussey of Savanna died Nov 21 in Savanna City Hospital after a lingering illness. Funeral held at Freeport, burial at Amfielen Repose cemetery. Bourne born Amboy 1880 married Warren B Hussey in 1903, survived by son daughter grandchildren and a great grandchild. Augusta Cush 91 died Friday night in Savanna home. Funeral at St Peter s Lutheran, burial in Savanna Township Cemetery. Born Sag Bridge Ill 1871, married Emil C Cash 1893, resided in Savanna 46 years. Surviving three daughters, one son, two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, sister Mrs Alvina Simmer.

Sears Roebuck grants $300 to Shimer College

Shimer College president F J Mullen announced a $300 unrestricted grant from Sears Roebuck and Co as part of a new aid program for privately funded colleges. B F Hines presented the check in Freeport Illinois. Grants total 57 institutions nationwide, with Illinois receiving over 30. Corporate giving aims to rise from 200 million to 500 million annually by decade's end.

Barbara Voeckel Alternate in Make It With Wool Contest

Barbara Voeckel daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Voeckel participated in District Four Make It with Wool contest at the Norrish Auditorium Morrison. The event sponsored by the American Wool Council saw ten counties competing with Jane Bitting of Kewanee winning first. Voeckel placed second in the senior 18 to 21 group and earned an alternate spot for the state contest December 15 at Urbana. Her award was a 100 percent wool skirt.

The family of Mrs. W. H. Montague of Chadwick gathered Thursday at Rock Creek Grange hall for Thanksgiving. Theft of cash register at Haas Coal and Lumber

A Savanna company operator reported Saturday that a cash register and its contents were stolen from the Haas Coal and Lumber Company office during the noon hour. The loss amount was not determined. Also noted, Mr and Mrs Alvin Prowant were Thanksgiving guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Harold Prowant in Rock Falls.
